“A hotel full of history and love”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

We spent three nights and got a wonderful sense of Ollantaytambo & the Sacred Valley we wouldn't have gotten elsewhere. The hotel is like a warm hug from a loving family member. For us foodie travelers, the food in the attached restaurant is nothing short of amazing, and better than any supposedly high-end food we've had in other spots.

The staff went out of their way to accommodate our requests, and offer but don't pressure add-ons. We did the "pachamanca", a lunch in their organic farm, for $35 each. Fresh lamb, cuy, and duck from their farm were cooked with local potatoes and herbs, served with fresh cut vegetables. 100% of the meal came from on-site, and was beyond compare.

We also indulged in an in-room massage for $50/hr. For both of us it was well done and very helpful to work our tired hiking muscles.

The beds are firm, but very comfortable. The window coverings keep the room extra dark, so be sure to bring an alarm clock, or it could be noon before you get up!

A path from the hotel leads directly to the open air market and the entry to the Ollantaytambo fortress ruins and avoids all the traffic and vendors on the main roads. The path also allows for views of local farm along the way.

Despite the train stop right in front, it never seems too loud or intrusive, and only adds to the charming ambiance. Leaving the hotel will be easy, as we can just climb aboard from the hotel's front door.

A perfect stay.

We stayed there last week and have only the best things to say about it! First of all, the reservation process was flawless. Sergio was great - responsive to all of our questions and requests including getting our tickets to Machu Picchu. He was at the front desk when we checked in and made sure that everything was in order. Our room was fantastic - #12, in the back on the 2nd floor. High ceilings, beautiful bathroom, and incredible view of Mt. Victoria out our windows. Perfect! We loved the energy of the location, too - being at the train station! One morning at breakfast, we met the owner, Joaquin, who couldn't have nicer and more concerned that all was OK with our stay. His mother's and brother's artwork hangs everywhere and is wonderful. It's a perfect place to stay!

Room Tip: We loved #12, in the back on the 2nd floor

We stayed at El Albergue the night before hopping the train to Agua Calientes. The hotel is literally located at the train station which shaves off a great chunk of time in the morning when catching your train! The staff here are wonderful and helpful and the restaurant is also a delight. The rooms are centered around a large garden which is peaceful and serene. It can get chilly in the evenings (depending upon the time of year) but they provide heaters in each room which help to warm things up a bit. I think this hotel is every bit what one would expect in a tiny town like Ollantaytambo. It's small, family run, and takes pride in their service. Their breakfast in the morning is great. They offer to make omelettes, eggs, pancakes, etc. They also have fresh fruit and cereal. They can pack you a lunch to take up to Machu Picchu if you'd like. Their happy hour is 2 for 1 piscos, and they are delicious! We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay here, and highly recommend it to those who enjoy a few extra minutes of morning sleep and a bit less stress when it comes to catching the train!

Awesome staff, excellent, clean and spacious room. No elevator...stairs only. Breakfast included...very nice and friendly staff. Secure facility and area. Safe to walk around after dark.
I was so tired after tromping around ruins all day, I basically had a snack and pulled the covers on. Quiet and no one bothered me. No TV (if you require that). View from my windows was mountains and lush vegetation...beautiful.

Room Tip: If you have walking problems ask for a first floor room.

We recently spend about 18 days traveling through Argentina and Peru, and El Albergue was my favorite hotel. We had room 16, an upstairs corner room, and it was so lovely, with a great view of the mountains. The inn was just beautiful with a spectacular garden. The bar and restaurant were both excellent, and the location, right in the train station, was super convenient for taking the train to MP. It was our first stop in Peru, and really removed a lot of the stress of visiting MP. Ollantaytambo was a lovely town and definitely worth a day or two.

My only quibble is the hotel price in dollars, and the exchange rate they used was very unfavorable when we had to pay in soles (we ran out of $USD while in Argentina). So, bring enough dollars to pay for your room.

We had planned to stay at this hotel but they were fully booked. They did however graciously store our bags for the day and the manager Sergio went out of his way to find a driver for us to see the local sights and we were not even staying there. It's a beautiful small hotel and one can only imagine how the service would be if you we're trying there!

This is a lovely hotel in an old house that has been beautifully restored and decorated, with the unique character respected. Though the hotel is at the train station, the noise of the incoming and outgoing trains was not a problem in my back room overlooking the lovely back yard. The bed was possibly the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever had--large, with a firm mattress, and a pillowy duvet.

There is a problem with gnats, perhaps due to the location by the river. The first night they were everywhere, but I think other guests complained and the hotel may have fumigated or used some sort of insect spray. For whatever reason, the problem was much less the second night.

There is an excellent restaurant on site. Since the hotel is a 15-minute walk from the center of town this is very convenient.

A special thank you to Sergio at the front desk who was very welcoming and helpful and to Natalia who helped me book a driver for a private tour.
