“Great food, great location, and the staff was extremely helpful.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2009

Weren't planning on staying long but the food and the help the staff provided was awesome (whether it be guiding us on a mountain bike trail or recommending awesome hikes in the area). Instead of doing the Inca Trail, look into taking a guided trip with KB Tambo to Choquequierau, it's amazing and really in the middle of nowhere. Make sure to try the burritos and the guac, they're amazing!

The Hostel is right near the Ollantaytambo ruins and it is a short walk from the train station too. Nice clean room. The shower had an identity crisis. It would alternate between very hot and very cold every couple of minutes.

Also the walls are too thin that you can even hear the people next door whisper. Don't say anything personal to your partner 'cause they may hear you!

We stayed two nights at KB Tambo's in Ollantaytambo, and wished we could have stayed more. If only we would have known how much we would enjoy Ollantaytambo's setting and offerings, we would have dedicated a lot more time here. In our pre-trip planning, the town looked like an ideal launch-pad for getting to Machu Picchu ahead of the crowds (as the train from here gets to Aguas Calientes much earlier than the train from Cusco). And yes: this plan did work, but our planning failed to take into account that Ollantaytambo itself was worth dedicating quality time to. It is small, built upon Inca foundations, and nestled in the Sacred Valley between two dramatic hillside ruins. It is a great base-camp for outdoor excursions to other Inca sites in the area (that are unbelievably numerous, and without crowds of tourists), and adventures in the great outdoors (trekking, mountain biking, etc.). For a town that appears so historic and quaint, there are a remarkable number of quality restaurants here (including the one operated by KB Tambo). The best food we had in Peru was served in Ollantaytambo.
The "hostal" was very reasonably priced, and for our modest accommodation fee we received a generously-sized second floor room that looked out upon the mountainside ruins. With out own private entrance situated within a locked courtyard (so your room is doubly secure) and a very modern bathroom with ample hot water, we were very impressed! The staff were friendly and helpful, and the owner took the time to show interest in our journey and even helped us arrange a fairly-priced taxi back to Cusco (we had been hosed on the ride in!).
Hopefully we will get the opportunity to return to Peru in the near future. If so, we know that we would make Ollantaytambo a focal point of our trip, as opposed to a pit stop. I don't think I need to see Machu Picchu again, but I would strive to get back to this area of the Sacred Valley. I'd stay a week, rent a mountain bike, and balance my time between the culturally-rich town and the incredible history and geography of the surrounding countryside. And I'd definitely stay at KB Tambo's.

We made all arrangements efficiently by internet and paid upon arrival. KB recommended numerous options for possible side trips from ½ day to several days. This was the only hotel of our trip that actually emailed us a confirmation a few weeks prior to arrival which was nice. If you have been to Peru, you know to confirm, confirm, and…. confirm again. KB Tambo is casual, comfortable, and relaxing. Breakfast is not included.

Rooms were adequate. The blankets were plenty warm. No extra heater is needed. There was no room service when you depart for the day, but I am sure if you requested it, they would make arrangements. The sink has only cold water and the bathroom was fairly small. The shower water was very hot and pressure excellent.

We did explore the roof where you could sit to enjoy wonderful views of the ruins or look down upon the inner garden filled with beautiful flowers.

We recommend the trip to Pumamarca (by car, hike or horse), climb the ruins behind the hotel, Abra Malaga Pass in the morning, and banana pancakes at Hearts Café in the plaza. Bike trips looked like they would be awesome if you have the time.

We stayed here and loved it! Ollantaytambo was our favorite town in all of Peru and KB Tambo was a perfect home base right in the heart of town. We had a double room overlooking the courtyard and with access to the roof deck with great views of the ruins. KB was a cool cat.

Lesson we learned to take us through Peru starting here: try the hot water at night. If you have it, take a shower. If you don't, try in the morning. Morning 2 we ran the water for 30 minutes before it was hot. The towel bar and toilet seat were a little broken, but clatterings from the bathroom just became a laughable part of our routine.

Favorite part of our two week trip to Peru. We stayed as a stepping stone back from our visit to Macchu Picchu. KB alone has a lot to offer. Chet was a very helpful guide through the Sacred Valley.

There are no frills, save excellent and friendly advice from owner KB (he knows a ton about local mtn biking and the ruins) and GREAT meals. Thhis is not luxury, but a fun and hospitable place. The location is a little close to the sometimes busy street and you want to stay in the newer part of the place, but nothing to complain about--we had a fun and relaxing time.
