This review is a little late in coming, but I finally decided to post something when I realized that I've been relying on other people's reviews and not doing my part!
As with all lodgings, I think that what one pays and expects to get in return shapes the experience. My husband and I stayed in a junior suite for two nights that cost $500 per night. This of course included all of the meals and many extras, including some nice guided tours of the property, happy hour, and other amenities.
We wanted a nice splurge at the end of our trip and got one. I would definitely recommend this place again. However, I would not recommend anything more than a standard room. We had a great large room with a fireplace. It didn't have a bathtub, and unfortunately I was forced to take a tepid shower or two. The room was spacious and romantic, but we liked the common spaces on the property so much that we actually spent little time in the room. So it doesn't seem really worthwhile to spend so much for a room that you may not really utilize. For the standard room rate, I think that this place is a steal! Someone complained that the room and service didn't warrant the high price he paid for his suite. I can understand what he means. These are Four Seasons and Ritz prices in many cities, but we didn't get that kind of attentive service. It was actually something my husband and I said to each other upon checking into our room. Nevertheless, the staff members were very attentive and helpful.
The food, the overall property, and little tours made the experience worthwhile. The meals were delicious (although after a couple of days we felt like it was starting to get monotonous - since the menu, while lengthy, remains the same). I absolutely loved the house black tea. They grow it there. Buy some to take home! We appreciated the fact that lunch hours were long and went late into mid-afternoon so that we could still eat at the restaurant when we returned after a long day at MP.
We participated in a couple of guided tours of the property - of orchids and birds. Those were worth getting up early in the morning. We also paid for massages, which were amazing. Other than the long day we spent hiking around MP, we passed most of our time sitting around a warm fire in the lobby, sipping something refreshing and reading a book. It was a relaxing splurge. So stay here! But try to get more bang for your buck by choosing a standard room and take advantage of all the little perks.
