My sister and I booked a tour called "Rediscovering The Lost City of the Incas" that was being offered by Gate 1 Travel through Living Social. Our entire experience with Gate 1 from start to finish was excellent. After we booked the trip, I had to contact Gate 1 to confirm the dates and give them information needed for the tours. The customer service representative I spoke to, Kate, was extremely friendly and knew exactly what to do. Kate had us ready to go by the end of a 20 minute phone call.
The trip itself was expertly organized. Our Tour Manager, Julio, and his assistant, Tomas, were waiting for us when we arrived at the airport. They took control from there. Everything was planned to the very last detail down to having people at the airport to handle our baggage for us when we arrived.
The first leg of the tour was in Urubamba, a city about an hour outside of Cusco. From Urubamba we took very nice, air conditioned, buses to the ancient ruins of Pisaq, Ollant ay Tambo and of course Machu Picchu. In Urubamba my sister and I paid a little extra ($25 per person) to have a traditional Peruvian dinner with a family at their home. Well worth the money is quality of food and experience. It was great experiencing the local culture. From Urubamba we traveled to Cusco where we explored the ancient city and all of its history. Finally, after leaving Cusco we traveled to Lima and explored all of the wonderful history it has to offer.
Every single tour, except the tour of the city of Lima, was guided by Julio or Tomas who are experts. They both offered a wealth of information and were always able to answer our questions. I learned while in Peru that studying Tourism at the University takes 5 years. It was clear that our guides were well educated by the quality of their tours. Not only were they informative, our guides were prepared and organized. Every place we went they were ready with our tickets and itinerary. Julio even had Peruvian money on hand and exchanged US dollars with us in case we didn't have time to stop at the bank. I developed good relationships with both guides and plan on keeping in touch with them. I can't say enough great things about both of them.
In short, I would recommend this trip and Gate 1 to anyone interested in seeing Peru and learning about the history of the Incas. I learned and had a blast, who knew you could do both at the same time!
