Our daughters arrived in Peru a week before we did and had found the San Antonio Abad Hotel through a friend of theirs. Once there they suggested my wife and I cancel the Multi-national chain hotel we had reservations for, and stay here when we too would be in Lima, later in our trip.
We are very, very glad that we did. The staff at San Antonio Abad are efficient, compassionate, caring, professional, and quick to act on every need or request. The hotel itself is a classic, with a lot of warm wood and a feeling of being "home" despite being in the midst of a city of 9 million people. The breakfast is wonderful with very fresh fruits and a variety of items and made-to-order omelets (tortilla) by Char!
Location is just far enough from downtown to be away from the high-priced noisy tourist-havens, and yet only two blocks from the Metroplitano (Lima's bus/metro system) station, so getting downtown was nearly effortless. A few blocks away and you are walking along the Melacón and LarcoMar. For those interested there are casinos, supermarkets, museums, and many other attractions within walking distance.
The staff arranged taxi service by a reputable firm, and gave us great suggestions for places to eat (we asked where the locals go and places which were economical) which exceeded our expectations.
San Antonio Abad is the type of place we hope for when we arrive in a new place: a bit like 'home' away from home and staffed by courteous and knowledgable personnel who have your well-being at the heart of their concern and focus.
We had already been to Cusco, many outlying archaeological sites, Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu and lots of dusty roads and hiking. Thus, I was starting to run out of clean clothes. I had occasion to use their in-house laundry service, which is reasonably priced, timely, and again efficient.
We highly recommend staying at the San Antonio Abad. And tell them the couple from Delaware with the three daughters sent you. And say hi to Jorge for the girls!
Ask for a room that overlooks the inner courtyard, a little quieter than the street-side rooms.
