Owner description: MUSEO LARCO OPENS FROM 9AM TO 10PM, DAILY. The Museo Larco is housed in an exquisite 18th century vice-royal mansion, built over a 7th century pre-Columbian pyramid and surrounded by beautiful gardens. The museum’s galleries exhibit the finest and most magnificent gold and jewelry treasures from Ancient Peru and the renowned erotic collection, one of Peru’s most celebrated attractions. Founded in 1926 and located in Lima, the Museo Larco holds the largest and most important archaeological collection of Ancient Peru in the world. Peru is known worldwide thanks to the legendary Inca Empire on the Andes Mountains; however few are aware that this society existed only for the last 100 years before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores. The Museo Larco portrays to the visitor an engaging narrative, recounting 5000 years in the development of Peru’s pre-Columbian history; thus becoming the ideal means to understand and enjoy Ancient Peru. On the Museum’s terraces overlooking its vibrant and stunning gardens, find Museo Larco´s Café restaurant, where one can savour the best of Peruvian and International cuisine. All in all, it’s accurate to say that to become fascinated by Peruvian history, the journey begins at Museo Larco!

“Well done museum.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

Museum guide was very much worth it. Fascinating history and explanations. Guide offered to take pictures of us then emailed photos of some of the more interesting artifacts.

“First rate museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

The Museo Larco was one of the high points of our stay in Lima, an excellent collection of artifacts from cultures throughout Peru. Most of the displays are in multiple languages. The restaurant on site is expensive. We solved that problem by having lunch at a nearby café and returning for another hour or so of museum exploration.

“Loved this museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

We heard it was one of the best in Lima and since we had such limited time, we decided to trust that advice... it did not disappoint. Great information in multiple languages for the exhibits.

“Beautiful museum inside and out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

I was really astonished by how many artifacts this museum has, especially in the storage areas, considering that the collection was built by one man. The exhibits were very nice although the explanation panels next to the items were sometimes hard to read as they appeared to be printed on flimsy material. The erotic collection was pretty amusing but definitely not for small children. If you have the chance you should also eat at the restaurant. The outside area is stunning - hanging ivy and flowers and cacti - it has a really romantic atmosphere. I ate the ravioli aji de gallina and it was delicious.

“Great Organized Museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013

When we arrived to the museum by taxi, you could only see the high white walls covered with flowers, but not much else. It did not hint on the treasures that await inside. In the museum, which was presented in an orderly and uncluttered fashion, there were many gold jewelry and funerary decoratives, ceramic pottery and textiles from Peru's past, beautifully presented. Downstairs, there was a huge collection of erotic ceramic pottery which should be for adults only. What was truly amazing is that in a separate room, there is a warehouse full of the ceramics that were collected. While the museum had a sample of each type of ceramic, the warehouse had many of the same types, all neatly arranged on the floor to ceiling shelves. Walking though the shelves and seeing all of the various types of ceramics was just mind boggling! There is also a nice restaurant on site that was recommended by the tour books, but when we were there, it was full and I could not get the attention of any of the staff, even though I walked through the restaurant 3 times. I told my wife that it may be a long meal since no one helped us, let alone if we were seated and had to wait for our meal. Therefore, we left and took a taxi to Larcomar for our meal. But the museum is highly recommended if you're in Lima.
