Owner description: MUSEO LARCO OPENS FROM 9AM TO 10PM, DAILY. The Museo Larco is housed in an exquisite 18th century vice-royal mansion, built over a 7th century pre-Columbian pyramid and surrounded by beautiful gardens. The museum’s galleries exhibit the finest and most magnificent gold and jewelry treasures from Ancient Peru and the renowned erotic collection, one of Peru’s most celebrated attractions. Founded in 1926 and located in Lima, the Museo Larco holds the largest and most important archaeological collection of Ancient Peru in the world. Peru is known worldwide thanks to the legendary Inca Empire on the Andes Mountains; however few are aware that this society existed only for the last 100 years before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores. The Museo Larco portrays to the visitor an engaging narrative, recounting 5000 years in the development of Peru’s pre-Columbian history; thus becoming the ideal means to understand and enjoy Ancient Peru. On the Museum’s terraces overlooking its vibrant and stunning gardens, find Museo Larco´s Café restaurant, where one can savour the best of Peruvian and International cuisine. All in all, it’s accurate to say that to become fascinated by Peruvian history, the journey begins at Museo Larco!

“An Oasis in Lima”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

This museum is housed in a beautiful old colonial house. I have been to some of the best archaeological museums in Latin America and this ranks very high. It has an outstanding collection of Nazca and Moche ceramics, impeccably displayed and can easily be viewed in about 1.5-2 hrs. The building itself is decorated with the best examples of colorful bougainvillea plants (that were in full bloom), that I have seen. We had lunch is their restaurant that looks out onto a garden. The service was excellent and food was as well.

“Lovely Larco”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012

Beautiful collection and gardens. And make sure you visit the storage area with its 45,000 items that didn't make it to the museum exhibits. Lunch at the cafe was good, a bit pricey for the budget conscious but worth it to treat yourself.

“Don't Miss This Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

The items in this museum are fantastic and you can take photos. Our guide, Miguel Angel Medina, spoke Spanish and English, but more important he has a passion for the pre-Columbian history of Peru shared by few. His ability to bring the artifacts to life without reading a script made the time we spent there by far the most valuable of our 2 week visit.

The cost of the museum is higher than you might expect (30/s per person) but it is a private collection maintained in pristine condition - worth far more than you pay. This was the only time we hired a guide and we made sure he was knowledgeable before we hired him. The cost of the guide is up to you, we tipped him what we believed his services were worth without consideration of the normal wages in Peru. He was worth every penny!

Please visit this museum while in Lima...especially if your next stage is Cuzco and Machu Piccu. Will give you some added insight into the mystery of those magical, spiritual remains!

“amazing museum and a great place to rest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

We loved everything here: the building, the garden and the collection of peruvian art from the very beginning of its history. The exponats were carefully choosen and beautifully exhibited. Do not mist the storage room, open for the visitors, were you can see thousands of these items that were not choosen for the main galleries. This will give you a better image of the museum's collection. And don't forget to visit the erotic gallery, on the ground floor, next to the restaurant! I had a special pleasure to enjoy the gala dinner of PLEA2012 conference in the gardens of Museo Larco and that was unforgetable!
