“Outstanding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2014

We called about a month ahead for reservations and we could only get a reservation for the private room so we couldn't really enjoy the real atmosphere of the restaurant.

First of all service and the wine recommendation is excellent. For me this place had the best cevice, the freshest sushi, and the most amazing flavor combinations.
Yes, it's pricy but it's worth every penny.

“Great Culinary Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2014

This is one of my favorite meals while visiting Peru, unfortunately it was one of the pricier ones too for Peruvian dining standards. Was it worth it, YES! This is more of an upscale dining experience. You need to make a reservation since this place is always packed, we were seated in the bar area which is not too bad. You just don't have the comfort of a dining table and chair but you are able to order everything in the menu. Our server was very good and speaks excellent English. His recommendations were also excellent. I really like the Japanese/Peruvian fusion which is also called Nikkei. The dishes are very innovative, creative and delicious. The fish is really fresh. The menu also has a good selection. I would be back to this place every day if I can afford it.

“Wow! Amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2014

I liked everything! The food was amazing and inventive. The seafood is really out of this world and so fresh. You must give it a try and I will also give a thumbs up to the champagne and the service. Really top notch.

“Top restaurant in the world”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2014

The concierge in our hotel recommended Maido as our last Lima meal, as Astrid y Gaston was closed for a private party. We were excited about Nikkei and sushi in a seafood capital, but Maido exceeded all expectations. I am from NYC and have eaten sushi in NYC, San Francisco, Phoenix, LA, Washington DC and Chicago. I have never had sushi so amazing. There was a tuna dish with egg that was amazing and the rockfish appetizers and ceviche were so flavorful, savouring was required. The staff was very attentive and made excellent recommendations. I think the people who do not feel its anything special didn't have staff help. Hats off to this chef- please open a Maido in the US ASAP!

“Excellent experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2014

We let ourselves have one 'splurge' meal in Lima (we now wish we were less frugal!) and we chose Maido because we love Japanese food and read good reviews here.

We went for the Nikkei experience (15 course tasting menu) and were not disappointed. The service was excellent (thank you to Carlos and his team) and the size and pace of the courses was perfect. The tasting course menus were in the guise of a 'Japanese Passport' that was waiting for us when we arrived. Mitsuharu Tsumura, the owner of the restaurant, came out to greet us at our tables which was an excellent touch.

Our favourite courses were hard to pick, as it was mostly fantastic, but the Octopus and the Grouper were highlights. We were a little disappointed with the ceviche and tiradito however - they were both quite overpowering acidity-wise, which we are used to in ceviche, but the acidity was a little too strong and not balanced out with anything else on the dish e.g. lacking some sweet potato etc.

We also went for the drinks pairing - I can't make up my mind as to whether this was worth it - we tried two cocktails, sake, craft Peruvian beer and two types of wines. The portions of wine and beer were a little on the small side for my liking, but it was an interesting range of drinks. The pairings were well thought out, e.g. the creamy craft beer against the sharp ceviche. It would have been useful to have a pairing menu though, as we were left wondering whether we needed to stretch our drinks across a number of courses, as a number of courses did not come with pairings.

In summary, it was definitely an experience and the service and food were excellent.
