“Very poor to terrible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

This was a construction zone (July 2013). I had to close all curtains for any privacy from guests and workers passing by my windows in my ground floor room . Mahogany floors ? Mine were tiles with the so-called bathroom down a flight of stairs and no hot water to the hand-basin . The "dining room " was outside and consisted of two tables with bench seating and a jury-rigged light to eat by . The kitchen and bar were also outside and not very inviting although the food was quite good - the only saving grace !

Were it not for the exotic connection with Werner Herzog, Mick Jagger and the 1982 film, this review would be less positive. The food was great and the staff very good, but the rooms are not well maintained - the floor was filthy and the bed sheets appeared not to have been changed between guests!! In addition, our pre-paid stay was added to the account in what looked like a clumsy attempt to double bill, which left a bad feeling all round.

I stayed at the Casa Fitzcarraldo for one night in May 2013. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The pool and garden were very nice. They have a great treehouse in the garden, and when climbing in the treehouse I had a very close encounter with a sloth – fantastic! We stayed in the suite in the lower floor. It was comfortable, although a bit warm for sleeping – it would be nice to have air conditioning. The included breakfast was good. The location is a couple of kms from the center of Iquitos, but close to the port if you’re heading down the Amazon. The neighborhood around the hotel is quite poor. A moto taxi to the Plaza de Armas takes about 10 minutes and costs 3 soles. I also spent a night at a hotel in central Iquitos, which was less than half the price, had air conditioning, and was much more convenient for exploring. While I enjoyed the Casa Fitzcarraldo, especially the beautiful garden, I think I the next time I’m in Iquitos I will just stay in town.

Nice & quiet, with history & Fitz Carraldo Movie shown by the owner & producer Walter Saxer.

Unfortunatelly it looks like the casa has seen better days already - but still nice place, neat rooms and friendly staff.

Offered privat guided, 2-days 1 night jungle stay was - in my opinion - with about 300 US$ for 2 persons a little overpriced. I've seen better jungle by far.

La Casa Fitzcarraldo is probably the best place to stay in Iquitos. It is beautiful, filled with luscious plants and a few animals, an outdoor pool, lots of outdoor common areas, including a treehouse with wifi, and hammocks. It is beautifully decorated, the food is delicious (best "breakfast included" I've had in Peru, plus great menu items and a great bar), and the staff couldn't be kinder. They basically let us use our room for a whole extra day for free (instead of check out at 10am). Plus you can drink the tap water.
Slightly removed from the city (S/3 mototaxi from the plaza), but in my opinion that's a plus -- less noise and getting too and from the city is super easy.
Couldn't recommend it more! A great place to relax between jungle excursions, or just spend the day at the pool and eat here.

Room Tip: Might not want one of the rooms surrounding the pool on the bottom floor if you plan to be around du...

We stayed at the blue room: spacious, with private bathroom, fan and views to the garden with swimming-pool. The outdoor area of the property definitely stands out and even those guests that do not sleep in, can enjoy the pool during the day for a reasonable fee. There are hammock areas and a very tall tree house, all surrounded by luscious Amazonic vegetation.

There is also a restaurant and bar by the pool, serving a variety of well-cooked and presented regional, national and international dishes. I'd recommend the charcoal grilled chicken or fish and the camu-camu juice (so refreshing!). Breakfast is served indoors in the dinning-room and consists of fruits, fresh fruit juice, eggs cooked to your liking, freshly brewed coffee, breads, pastries, spreads, cheese and cold cuts.

Although not in the very centre of Iquitos, Casa Fitzcarraldo is less than 10 minutes drive away, and moto-taxis are as available as they could be, during the day and night. We only used taxi from and to the airport, booked with the staff, at a reasonable fee.

We arrived from Cusco the day before our Aqua Expeditions Amazon Cruise because we didn't want some airport issue make us miss our cruise, and given the fine oiled machine that is Cusco airport (heavy sarcasm) that was probably a good idea. The better plan would have been to spend the night in Lima, which the Cusco to Iquitos flight stops in, and take the Lima to Iquitos flight that the rest of the cruise guests came in on.

This could well be the nicest hotel in Iquitos, but that is faint praise; you are basically staying at a hotel attached to a public pool and restaurant. The staff was helpful and pleasant, but the accommodations are far from first class. If you have to go to Iquitos, I'm sure there are a lot worse places to stay, but if you can avoid Iquitos all together and go directly to whatever Amazon adventure you have planned, you will be better off.
