I had similar experience with Gerson as described in two other recent reviews. However, the trip itself was good, and I did a lot of things mainly with Olin, and Bala. The main point of disappointment is actually the difference in what I paid and was agreed upon, in comparison what I got at the end. I booked my trip a month before leaving, since I had some flexibility in my schedule and asked Gerson if he is available between given days (10 days total), since I wanted to have him as a guide (as I could have adjusted my schedule around his). His response was that he would be my jungle tour guide for 8 to 9 nights in the jungle doing survival training, and if I could confirm my exact dates as he had to cancel other tours as he would have to be "compromised" by me during this period of time. I accepted a higher rate, even higher than other independent guides quoted me, as Gerson appeared to have a really good reputation and I liked the fact that he is local and shares his income with people in the village. (I don't want to talk numbers, but what I paid for one day with Gerson, for the same amount I was able to be in Iquitos for 3 nights total, including accommodation, tours, going out, eating out, etc.) I also have to say that price was fair on the days when we were doing what we were supposed to do, there is a lot of effort that goes into these kind of trips.
However, promised 8 to 9 nights in the jungle turned into 5 nights only, where Gerson himself was available for 3 days only. The rest of the time I joined other groups, and did daily excursions. While still paying the price as if I had a dedicated guide.
At the end of day, I really enjoyed the trip, and having it booked through Gerson I got access to the people, and villages I would not otherwise.
What would have given this review an excellent rating is if I was given lower rate on the days when I was spending time in the village, and the lodge. As this was fun part of the trip too, since I met some other very cool people, Or if Gerson was upfront and said that he wouldn't be available for the entire period, but have other guides to be with me, which again would have been fine with me as I had a blast with Olin and Bala.
I hope this improve, as I believe that Gerson and his small company do provide more unique personal experience than if booked through other lodges, However, the rates need to match services provided, as it is really unfair to be in a position where you are paying 3 to 4 times more than others and doing same activities together. I also asked if I can spend 6 nights total in the jungle, I never got yes or no as an answer, the request was just ignored and it continued as I never mentioned it.
On the bright side, I really liked Olin and Bala, those guys went out of their way to make my trip as best as they could, and I didn't mind that they didn't speak English, and with my limited Spanish, we still managed to communicate and have fun. I was impressed with their knowledge of the jungle, abilities to spot animals, hunting, fishing, excellent personalities, and list can go on. We did a lot of activities, camping, hiking, walking through the jungle, hanging out with locals, seeing shaman, watching locals fishing, hunting, etc.
