Owner description: THE #1 place to see wildlife in their natural habitat. No wildlife in domestic conditions for tourist entertainment. The Tapiche Reserve is deep inside primary rain forest. As conservators, we have a commitment to responsible conservation practices. Moreover, we continually endeavor to expand our conservation efforts while providing low impact tourism to the Peruvian Amazon. Accessible only by waterway, the 1540 hectare Reserve is situated 404 km up river from Iquitos, Peru. The day long journey into the jungle takes you through increasingly remote areas, away from touristic centers, and into territory seldom traveled by outsiders. The trip from Iquitos to the Reserve includes navigating up the Amazon, Ucayali, and Tapiche Rivers.

“Great trip - thanks Katoo!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2013

We had a great time at the Tapiche Ohara Reserve. Katoo was very helpful when we were organizing and planning everything. He was also able to help us with booking flights to and from Iquitos (which saved us some cash!) We saw all sorts of wildlife while we were there (various monkeys, birds, dolphins, iguanas, etc. etc). We went in the rainy season, so most of our transportation was in a canoe. We did do one day of trekking, which was great but also means seeing much less wildlife (not as quiet as a canoe!). I would recommend going in the rainy season if you want to see a lot of wildlife, and going in March was great because we were able to see the bird nesting area. The meals were great, lots of food and well prepared. The only downside to the whole trip is getting to and from the reserve (a very long day of travel - be prepared for all kinds of weather on the boat!). But that isn't really avoidable if you're looking to get somewhere remote, and it is well worth the trip. My only suggestion is making sure you have good rain gear, and lots of sunscreen and protective clothing as it may be 5-6 hours in the sun (especially if you're taking antimalarial pills that increase sun sensitivity! ouch!).

Thanks Katoo for the memorable experience, and we would highly recommend this trip to anyone wanting to experience the jungle with some amazing guides!

Thank you Vanessa and Tyler,

Thank you that there are people like you that preffer to go far away and take chances to see wild life in their NATURAL habitat, instead of staying around Iquitos and go petting wild life in domestic conditions. We will keeping improoving our transportation and lodging quality, Your visit helped the reserve. And that was the very first year that the birds could reproduce at the nesting area, the years before they were attacked by people who came to steal the eggs. Now with your help and other visitor we can keep watrching out for them. The Agami herons(blue and red ones) baies are about to fly.
Sincerely

katoo

“A memorable experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

After getting some info and talking to Katoo, we decided to visit the reserve last minute - and im extremely glad we did. The journey there on the Lancha to Requena was amazing, cruising down the Amazon and Ucayali into the sunset, before meeting guide Segundo and taking the speedboat for 5 hours further and further away from civilisation...the lodge is picturesque, with a nice spacious kitchen and good food over the 3 full days we spent there - because of wet season our time was spent almost entirely on boats which was great as we floated unheard whilst monkeys jumped around in the trees above and we spotted many other animals. My friend Helyn befriended a small, handsome lizard - simon...we were both seriously impressed by the knowledge Segundo and his brothers had of the jungle, the animals/plants and their incredible ability for spotting things of interest which we wouldnt have a chance of seeing...also the focus on seeing animals undisturbed in their natural habitat was reassuring, especially after hearing a lot of bad stories about "jungle tours" around Iquitos, and the experience of being out in the middle of the rainforest surrounded by water and noises of the jungle so far away from everything was powerful indeed - thanks for a great trip

Thank you So much for the review,
We just been very lucky to find people like you that want to experience the real jungle, taking the chances to see the wild life in their real habitaht, witch is not so easy , instead of going to places where the animals are pet and the birds have their wings cuted as atraction.
Segundo and Hector are very naturaly enthusiastic to show the wild life and teatch about it, it has changed their life and the surrounding area is very thankfull for visitor like you.

muchas Gracias in name of the all Reserva Tapiche

“The real thing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

I have just come back from the Tapiche reserve. What an amazing experience. Its a days trip to the reserve. Via motortaxi, minibus, fast boat then small boat with an outboard motor for the final leg. This you may think is a lot of travelling but boy is it worth it. You are in the jungle proper no small trip away from iquitos. Our guide was Hector an ex hunter turned guide using his hunting skills to find the animals and his jungle knowledge to find fresh water and some tasty some not so tasty fruits in the jungle.

A day consists of moving through the jungle by canoe and/or foot. Occasionaly wading in water over your welly boots (supplied) surprisingly refreshing. Now the important thing animals. We saw monkeys, sloth, caymen, giant frogs, snakes, bats and too many birds and insects to mention. I really think this is down to the fact you are deep in the jungle on a reserve where hunting isnt allowed.

Im travelling for a year around south america and this will definetly be a highlight!

Tip - bring sun cream, insect repellent a hat, waterproof coat and two changes of clothes one for the jungle and the other dry for the lodge.

Hello Tom,
Thank you so much for your review and especialy for your visit, Thank you for trusting us and taking the chances ( to see wild life free in theier habitaht ) of going to a place where there are no wild animals as pets for taking pictures and fake indigenous shows. Your visit supports our cause, give the locals a alternative income( instead of timber), and inderectely protec the rain forest.

“A Perfect Jungle Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2013

This place is amazing!! I spent 5 days there and loved every minute of it. The full day travel from Iquitos to the reserve was the perfect way to start our adventure, Our guide Secondo ( I'm not sure of the spelling) was incredible. His knowledge of the jungle blew us away, we saw so many animals! ( 6 species of monkeys in one day ) Wading through waste deep water in the amazon while howler monkeys jumped between trees overhead was definitely a highlight! The lodge itself was really good too. The hammocks were comfortable, bathrooms clean and there was lots of good food. The other reviews i've just read here really sum up my own feelings about the place and after talking to Katoo about conservation and his love for the jungle i'm really happy I chose this place to experience the amazon and not one of the many companies that are based closer to Iquitos. It's really worth going the extra distance to have a real jungle experience.
I also hope Matilda the tortoise we released back into the wild is happy at her new home!!

“TAPICHE OHARA RESERVE AMAZON WITH THE KATOO”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

Tapiche Ohara is way out there...Katoo is a expert wildlife tracker... full of good stories and info he grew up on the Brazilian side of the amazon...it one hell of a journey to get to tapiche - really gives you a sense of how the local Indians live and how the bigger rivers converge and separate - He can spot animals russling faraway - and slalom through small rivers in the middle of the blackest nights full speed with only a flashlight - the outlines of the trees against the night sky are the natural road signs he knows so well....

Never seen so many pink dolphins swimming buy, within seconds of spotting a cayman at night and he cornered it lifted it in the boat...awesome treks through the forest in the daytime.. caught some piranhas ...beware of jaguars..on the walk.!

Awesome adventure- some mystical old trees out there as well... highly recommended - was there for a bout 4 or 5 days wish i had been there much longer

Tim
