The Tahuayo Lodge (and research center) is like no other place we have ever been before. Sitting on stilts on the Tahuayo Tributary of the Amazon River, the lodge offers guests wonderful daily and nightly, adventures into the jungle with fabulous guides who can spot monkeys, exotic birds, spectacular insects, and fish while they (the guides) paddle you through the jungle in wooden canoes. It truly is (at least) a once in a lifetime experience that includes a zip line trip in the tree canopy,100 feet above the jungle floor. Given that the lodge is four hours from modern conveniences, guests should be impressed that accommodations are so comfortable with tented beds and simple but delicious meals served in the dining hall. The owners work hard to respect the indigenous people and protect the jungle environment. The lodge uses solar energy which, for example, reduces the level of artificial light at night. But this is part of the experience. We would recommend this lodge to anyone who wants to have a true Amazon experience. If you go, be sure to take a head lamp, binoculars, a good (zoom lens ) camera, and mosquito repellent.

Room Tip: The rooms on the riverfront appear to be the brightest with best vistas.

The amazon is a wonder. Weather forcast- 84, very humid, rain on and off, often torrential. Biodiversity unbelievable. But without a guide, just looks green. Tahuayo Lodge and the Research Center provided simple, clean, dry and insect-proof lodging, delicious food and wonderful staff. My wife and I had our own guide for 7 days,Josias. His ability to see animals and birds in the dense forest was spectacular. And in part because he grew up in the jungle, he understood and could explain the interactions between the plants and animals so well. The forest comes alive at night. There is so much sound, including things banging on the roof. In general, we didn't want to know what was happening out there. The next day we mentioned the loud sounds to our guide..."It's a jungle" David and Kathy Neely

Room Tip: amusing to think of swimming pool and fitness center in the Amazon No A/C, no fans, no hot water. T...

We went as a group of five with a particular interest in tropical fungi, however we were also wide eyed and amaized when it came to the other fora and fauna. We spent 8 days in February at Tahuayo Lodge which is technically the rainy season and much of the Amazon basin was under water. What rain we had fell mostly at night and in a deluge while we were tucked in high and dry under our mosquito netting. The days were mostly sunny and not as hot as I had expected, coming from the great white North. The guide, Fernando was excellent. He discussed each day's options, we made a plan and then boated, canoed and slogged our way to some interesting destination. It was rarely more than than a few minutes before we would run across some new plant or critter and Fernando seemed to know something interesting about them all. It is not possble to list all we saw and did in our 8 days but it would include sharing lunch with a friendly monkey, catching Red Bellied Piranah, canoeing with camen, watching the elusive and strange Hoatzin, zip-lining in the canopy, spear fishing at night, roasting grubs for lunch and much more. Through it all we were well fed (even the grubs were tasty)and cared for (showers, laundry service). The Amazon is one of the Natural Wonders of the World and I was glad to have been able to experience it in such a comfortable and interesting way. You need your deet.

Our trip was fantastic. Tahuayo Lodge is in a beautiful setting, nice accommodations, excellent staff, delicious food. Our group spanned in age from 9-84 yrs. and everyone enjoyed the adventure, relaxation, and beauty. There is something for everyone.
Our guides, Jonathan and Donaldo were superb, can't say enough good things about them. Highly professional, thoughtful, always tailored our outings to our wishes and tastes. My 84 yr old dad was with us and he felt comfortable (a great achievement) and taken care of. Chef, on the request of Jonathan, cooked us some native foods, including a wild pig a hunter caught. It was fantastic. Guides and staff really do cater their service to your needs and expectations.
We zipped lined, went on a wilderness walk (saw monkey, sloth, poisonous frogs, lots of spiders, birds), fished for piranahs which we cooked that night, and swam in the black water lagoon. We also took an afternoon swim in the river in front of the lodge. It was paradise! Jonathan gave us the piranha teeth for souvenirs and my girls took them to school to show.
Both guides know their stuff, and they are kind, caring individuals. Again, most pleased with your entire staff. Clean, spacious rooms. Listening to the wildlife in the mornings (monkeys, birds) and at night (insects, toads) was so lovely! Setting is exciting, new, yet soothing and relaxing.
All around a fantastic experience. I can see coming there year after year, without getting bored as there is so much to see, absorb, learn, and experience.

The food was great, the guide was kind and knowledgeable and the trip was a great mix of adventure and time to relax. The best part was getting to pick what you wanted to do as you went, and having your own guide throughout the trip. The other people in the lodge were always so nice and very interesting to talk to, but there was also lots of time to spend reading or relaxing however you wanted. I would def recommend to anyone!

My husband and I recently returned from a wonderful time at the Tahuayo Lodge & Research Center. He spent a total of 20 days; during the first 10 before I arrived, went camping in the jungle with a guide. He had wanted a more rugged experience and it lived up to his expectations and more. After I arrived, we spent 3 nights at the Lodge, then 6 nights at the Research Center, focusing mostly on bird watching. I saw over 100 species of birds, mostly all new to me. It was fabulous! We loved our guide Orlando who was a great match for Bob's desired jungle camping experience, and was also great for the rest of our stay with hikes in the grid, fishing, boat and canoe rides, and bird watching Both he and his boatman and were amazing at spotting and calling in birds, and took such good care of us. We loved the lodges, the staff who were friendly and professional, the food which was simple but very good & safe, the interesting people we met, the zip line, and all other experiences. We were also impressed with Paul Beaver's devotion to the environment and the neighboring communities. To get a better idea of Paul's amazing experiences and efforts in establishing the lodges, and an appreciation for this jungle region, read his Jungle Diary Book before or during your stay.

Room Tip: If there is an option to indicate a room choice, request a room on the river.

My recent visit to Tahuayo village, Iquitos, Peru was a "voluntourist" to teach Conversational English to Chino Village and nearby villages - children and parents (5-63 years old) Three sessions AM (children) PM (youth/parents) and evening (AE staff). Amazonia Expedition assigned Donaldo Navarro to be my guide. He assisted me in translating English/Spanish words for easy understanding of the students. His first teaching responsibilities with AE and handled it with excellence based on jungle/rainforest/animals, etc as examples of sentence structures which were all familiar to the students. Hence making learning process easy and understandable. Conversational English class was a BIG SUCCESS knowing that students were able to communicate simple conversation with some tourists who visited Chino Village. Perhaps there are some tourists who would want to share their time and talents to the less fortunate people who need help. Pls. feel free to communicate with Amazonia Expedition and experience the same feelings I had with the villagers of Tahuayo.

Room Tip: Cabin #7 - clean, tidy and cozy.
