We stayed here as part of our package with Active South America, resulting in three different stays for a total of 5 nights in three different rooms over a period of 10 days. So we got a pretty good look at the place.
The hotel (or hostel, depending which literature you read) was at all times cold and uninviting.
We were particularly unimpressed to return from the rigours of the Inca Trail to find the showers were running cold. We like to shower twice a day and in the time we were there the showers were hot on just three occasions. On one occasion there was no water at all, on another the water was completely cold, at all other times the water was tepid at best.
Two of the rooms had no basin plug and only one had an electric heater. Two rooms had no storage for clothes (other than in one room that provided an old TV cabinet as storage!)
Other writers have commented on the noise: apart from noise from an adjacent school there is also a sports area that is in use mainly by soccer players until late in the evening, and those guys made a lot of noise!
The reception staff were generally OK with one exception, a young woman. One of us picked up a knee injury on the Inca Trail and she charged for a small bag of ice! On another occasion she paid a taxi fare of 3 Soles (the taxi driver could not change a 50 soles note), but then insisted on retaining the 50 soles note until the 3 soles was repaid. She charged a friend 6 soles (over $2) for making a local call from the front desk - the calls are free from the bedrooms.
The young woman in the breakfast room was very pleasant but the food on offer was poor for choice and quality and was the same every day.
Shame on Active South America for using such a place.
