Down a back-street of Cuzco is the Hostal Rumi Punku. Not much to look at from the front (apart from the impressive gateway that had a locked gate) but once inside we were in a delightful courtyard with rooms off it.

A very clean and well maintained place with a lovely breakfast room and balcony from which you could look over the rooftops in tranquility.

The place was very close to the 5* Monasterio on a street that had cafe's, internet cafes, small shops and lots of laundry services. It was only two blocks (5 minutes walk) from the main square but as the road was a dead end, there was no passing traffic and the place was very peaceful.

The only negative was that they couldn't cope with our early starts to Manu and to the airport on our second stay - breakfast started at 6 and there was no moving it as "the bread won't have arrived".

That aside, the rooms were good, warm and very clean.

  • Liked — Location and the security
  • Disliked — Breakfast
  • Tips/Secrets — Meals at nearby Jacks Cafe were good. Our last meal at the small, nearby Inka-Fe cafe was excellent.

We stayed at the Hostal Rumi Punku on three separate nights in July 2006.

Pros: We booked through the website, which was very convenient and designed to accept reservations for non-consecutive nights.
- The common areas of the hotel 'compound' are especially pretty: a nice courtyard, upstairs patio and indoor lounge area.
- In terms of logistics, our airport pick-up met us right on time and there was no problem storing our bags.
- The service was friendly and helpful.
- Consistent hot water and complimentary heaters.
- Good location: street was quiet at night but a close walk to the center of the action.

Cons: Rooms themselves vary in size and brightness (we stayed in three different rooms). None are spectacular, but it seems unlikely you'll be hanging out in your room. If you are particular about such things, the 3rd floor seemed to get more light.

I place a high value on atmosphere and good service and this place had both in spades. We elected to save money by staying at Rumi Punki in Cuzco and splurging elsewhere on our honeymoon and we were very happy with that decision. As long as you're not expecting the Monasterio or the Novotel, it's more than adequate and definitely above average in terms of value for money.

My husband and I stayed at Rumi Punku five nights (supposed to be four but I got very sick from altitude on our "last" night), and we thought it was very charming and comfortable. I believe the staff member we thought was so nice is Jorge. The price was right, and the beds were great. Bathroom had new and clean tile with hot water.

It was so convenient to Cusco sights of interest, shopping and other essentials like a full-service laundry and many great restaurants right on the same street. Try Inca Fe. It doesn't look like much, but the food was great! We also enjoyed A Mi Manera nearby.

The breakfast was good for Peru. Don't compare to the U.S. or U.K. Not many countries focus on breakfast it seems. It was better than the Mediterranean countries I've visited.

  • Liked — the charming structure and decor
  • Disliked — no bath tub

I stayed at Hostal Rumi Punku on two occasions during a trip to Peru in July 2006 and can't say enough about the courtesy and comfort I experienced during both stays.

From the first contact via internet, to the wonderful airport pickup, to the delicious breakfast that included eggs, fruit, tea/coffee, and bread, to the comfortable beds and down comforters, to the beautiful view over Cusco on the rooftop deck, and most especially the courtesy and attention to detail shown by the staff, I had a wonderful stay and have already recommended it to a few people.

Hot showers were very appreciated during a particularly cold spell during this Peruvian winter, and the heaters in the room also helped. Javier and Jorge on the staff went above and beyond to help me with a few details, including finding another spot to stay on a night when they were full. I was happy to return to Rumi Punku, well located on a safe street.

While the rooms on the upper floors offer a little more quiet, all have nice beds, and it's easy to fall asleep at this lovely courtyard hotel. If you want fancy, high-rise style, you would probably be better at a larger and more expensive location, but for most visitors to Cusco, this immaculate, well-run and attractive spot is a wonderful choice.

We stayed in this hotel for 7 nights in July 2006. The location is superb and the place is very safe. The rooms are clean and the staff are very helpful. The breakfasts are good (fruit, cereal, bread, eggs, yogurt, fruit juice) but it was the same each morning. A bit of variety would not go amiss.

It can be noisy in the mornings as trekkers head off early. The sound of heavy mountain boots and conversations by insensitive guests can start at around 5am so anyone who wants a deep sleep should bring earplugs. Overall though, this place can be highly recommended.

I have just returned from Peru. I agreed with the previous review - Good value but you get what you pay for...
Rooms are clean and staff helpful. They will pick you up at the airport free of charge. Two words of warning: Do not pay your bill in soles. They use a flat rate of 3.45 soles per dollar. The dollar has been between 3.20 - 3.25 soles the last few weeks so we felt rip off. We had all our money changed to soles.
Second warning - do not use the phone. They charged us 9 soles for a 30 seconds phone call to a hotel staff who was organising a tour for us. He supposed to be in touch but we didn't hear from him so we asked reception to check with this member of their staff if our tour was going ahead. Reception did call him and billed us for the it.

I think next time I am in cuzco I will try the San Blas Neighbourhood. It seemed more authentic to me. The centre of Cuzco is becoming too tourist and artificial.

There is a great little bar/restaurant in the same street than Rumi Punku called Moloko. Food is cheap and includes some delicious typical Peruvian dishes. They also have a cinema room with surround sound upstairs where you can enjoy one of the two daily films free of charge.
