From the moment we were picked up at the airport, we were in very good hands at Rumi Punku. The staff gave us advice about dealing with the altitude and had us check in not while standing at the counter, but by sitting in the lounge sipping coca tea. They were always helpful and they know their audience. A lot of people stay here before going on multi-day treks, returning for a night or two afterwards, so they make everything about that easy, starting with the (hearty) breakfast at 5:00 am, providing a scale in the lobby so you know your luggage isn't over the weight limit, making it super easy to store your remaining baggage there and have it magically reappear in your room when you return. The rooms are simple but tasteful, with very comfortable beds. The hotel is in a great location sort of between the city center and the San Blas neighborhood (although the great location comes with some noise at night). The original Inca doorway is an extra plus.
I only had two negatives. First, they provide you with some free water on day one, but when that's gone you are on your own and need to pay. Our hotel in Lima provided an electric kettle so we could make our own safe drinking water. Second, we had some evidence of a rodent visitor in the middle of the night. I don't feel like this is a big deal or a reflection of a cleanliness problem--it's just the reality of an older building in the middle of a pretty busy city.
All in all, a wonderful place with a great staff and lots of character.
