“Great expedition wagon ”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2015 NEW

Everywhere I heard the "expedition" Is a train for backpackers, however I'm impressed with the nice seats and view that you can get in there.

If you want to save money, take the expedition, highly recommended!

“Killer views and an unforgettable journey to Machu Picchu”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2015 NEW

I rode on Peru Rail from Ollataytambo to Aguas Calientes on my way to Machu Picchu in late April. The service was reliable and on time. The staff was friendly, bilingual and organized. The train cars were comfortable and provided great space for your luggage both in the luggage racks and under the tables. A light snack and drinks (non- alcoholic) were included on the first leg of my trip with PeruRail. The ride does get bumpy at times but overall it was a good experience.

I would suggest booking in advance as they sell out quickly.

For my return trip from Machu Pichhu to the Pashar train station ( there is no direct train to Cusco until May because of the rainy season - major bummer) I booked the Vistadome Option and it's well worth the extra fee. The killer views along with the more comfortable seats made the ride pleasant and relaxing. They provide a decent snack (corn snack with some fruit, pastries and non- alcoholic drink of your choice) They also showcase some high end alpaca fashions which are hard to find in the area. They are really pricey ($150-$200 per garment) but they are very luxurious and well designed.

My main gripe / complaint is the bus service to Cusco from Pashar. The ride is about 2 hours through some of the worst roads in the area. The bus was extremely uncomfortable with poor temperature controls. Either too hot or too cold. The staff was very nice and tried to help but there's not much to do on a long bus ride. The final bus stop is pretty secluded and a bit dark. I would suggest arranging private transportation from there to your hotel and avoid the taxis outside of it.

“Beautiful scenery, good service, very slow trains”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2015

My wife and I were visiting Machu Picchu two weeks ago and traveled from Ollantaytambo to the Machu Picchu station via Peru Rail. The station area was nice (nice places to get espresso and food) as were the trains. Aboard the seats were comfortable and the bathrooms clean. The service was also very good while aboard. The best part of the rail is of course the views of the Andes as you are making your way to the MP station.

While we were not in any particular hurry, be mindful of the fact that the trains are extremely slow. It's an hour and 45 minute ride due to the speed (running 15-20 mph) not the distance. On our return the train stopped for a good 15 minutes on the track to allow another outbound train to pass. After a long day of hiking, sweating, and then getting caught in the rain you are very enthusiastic to get back to your hotel so this was inconvenient and there was no message from the crew as to the cause for the stop or ETA.

I would have selected 3.5 stars if possible. The scenery, service, and train cars were very nice and we would use them again noting the required time.

“Nice ride”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2015 via mobile

Well, this is definitely an excellent mean of transport in Peru. I travelled with PeruRail, between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes and return. Nice wagons, nice crew, very comfortable, but let's be honest. It is way too expensive for a 1:30/ 2:00 trip.

“Scenic Ride”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2015

You get to see the amazing mountains on the way and back. The food was good and the entertainment on the way back was fun and exciting. There was even a fashion show!
