“Wonderful stay at the Hotel Monasterio”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2007

We stayed two nights at the Hotel Monasterio in Cusco before traveling to Machu Picchu and were very happy with our visit. The hotel is a converted monastery, and is beautiful and welcoming. The staff and service is excellent and we were able to purchase our Peru Rail tickets in the hotel, without having to wait in line at the train station. We stayed in a junior suite and the room was perfect, with high ceilings and stairs that led to the 2nd floor bedroom with a king size bed. We paid extra to have the oxygen pumped into our room, but we did not notice any benefits. It is probably best to follow the advice for high altitude – drink plenty of liquids and take it easy the first couple days. We were happy we stayed in this hotel and will always have beautiful memories of our visit.

My husband and I spent four nights at the Monasterio in early June. It provided a restful refuge from the activity of Cusco. It is undoubtedly the nicest place to stay in Cusco. Breakfast each morning was wonderful--plenty of options to choose from. Dinner in the restaurant was fine, but the food was nothing to rave about. One of the highlight of our stay was the trip to Chinchero (misspelled) which the hotel arranaged. Our guide was excellent and this Andean village is a must as well as Macchu Picchu. I would return to this hotel.

Wonderful stay at this hotel. Hotel staff were outstanding, so much attention to detail. The surroundings are remarkable so much to see and enjoy all of the history that this building offers. Great location. Breakfast buffet was outstanding. Dinner on Saturday with the Peruvian dancers was an added treat. Loved staying there most of all because of the staff.

  • Liked — Staff and attention to detail
  • Disliked — Not their fault, the high altitude

My wife and I stayed at the Monasterio on a trip to the sacred valley and Machu Picchu. I stayed there once before years earlier and was pleased to find the property continues to be well managed, top class, beautifully maintained and elegant. I like to backpack also but after a few days of bumpy roads, old taxis, minubuses and hustle and bustle of a bif third world capital (Lima) the Monasterio offers a welcome, relaxing launching pad and rest stop on a South American itinerary.

We spent 5 nights in Cusco, 3 of those in the Monasterio (we used Cusco as a base to visit several different places!). Every one of the 3 nights our room was upgraded. Nights 1 & 2 we were upgraded from Double Deluxe to Junior Suite, 3rd night from Junior Suite to Presidential Suite!! We couldn't believe our luck!
The hotel itself is stunning, the central courtyard is amazing, it's essential to sit out there for a drink or two. The rooms were all amazing, although the cleaners were a little over-zealous and threw away some cleansing wipes and hair bands, which was more inconvenient than anything.
Breakfast was very good, dinner was also very nice.
We had stayed in the Novotel (colonial room) prior to the nights here, the Monasterio was much nicer, but probably not worth twice the price.

This hotel is fantastic. We visited when I was about 16 (enroute to Machu Picchu of course). While there's obviously not a lot for children or teens to do (bring books!), the hotel was amazing. The set-up is very unique, the property is gorgeous, the rooms were awesome! We went in September, so the weather was kind of perfect! The food was fantastic, service was great, everything was wonderful!

I would recommend drinking the coca tea that they give you at check-in. Bring Diamox! The side effects of the altitutde are terrible (nosebleeds, headaches, difficulty breathing), but the hotel does their best to assist the guests with everything.

Stayed here while on a Lindblad Expeditions trip to Galapagos Islands, with an extension to Peru & Machu Picchu. Hotel is absolutely gorgeous with incredible artwork & antiques scattered throughout. For us, it was definitely a plus that you could get oxygen piped to your room as we were having a tough time with the altitude; we had not expected it to affect us much as we are used to hiking & staying at 8000-9000 feet -- what a difference a few thousand more can make! Great food at the hotel. Very pleasant staff. Unbelievable location, very convenient to most of the cultural attractions, restaurants & shopping.
