“Living history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

My family stayed at the Hotel Monasterio in Cusco in July, and LOVED it!!!

The overlapping and intersecting layers of history as you experience modern luxury in the context of a 16th century monastery, is mind-contorting in the loveliest possible way! Rooms are decorated with hand-painted frescoes and colonial-style paintings, while maintaining the original terra-cotta brick floors and vaulted ceilings (it seems). But the furniture is ample and comfortable, and the bathrooms are luxurious! It's a place where free wifi meets Gregorian chant music, where a history of austerity collides with a breakfast buffet over-laden with fresh fruit and French pastries. Where paintings of Catholic saints watch as you sip the traditional Quechua coca tea.

It was so beautiful, and the service was so exceptional, it would be worth making another trip to Peru just to spend more time in Cusco.

I stayed here just 2 nights as part of a tour. My only regret is that I didn't stay longer.

My deluxe room was huge. Bearing in mind it is a former monestary, I assumed the rooms would be small, but not at all. Very spacious with lovely furniture. I had two windows, one overlooked the beautiful courtyard and the other overlooked Cusco city. All the detail in the room was beautiful. The bed was very comfortable also and the room seemed to shut out any outdoor noise, which aided peaceful sleep.

The service in this hotel was excellent. The guy who showed me to my room took time to explain everything that I needed to know. The little extra touches on the service were very much appreciated, such as providing me with an adaptor as the one I had packed didn't work. The products in the bathroom are lovely too!

I read somewhere that the breakfast here is the best breakfast in South America. I do not dispute that. The buffet breakfast and additional options from the menu were more than substantial. Everything was of a very high quality also. The breakfast location was lovely, with views overlooking the courtyard.

The hotel's location could not be better. You were just a couple of minutes' walk from the majority of the tourist attractions and top restaurants in Cusco. I chose to eat lunches and evening meals away from the hotel as I did notice the dining options for lunch and dinner were not cheap and you could get comparable quality elsewhere.

The lobby/bar was stunning. Lovely atmosphere here in the evenings with live bands playing.

I now just have to find an excuse to go back to Cusco just to stay at this hotel again.

I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: I opted to upgrade to a deluxe room but I suspect superior is just as good.

Firstly I would like to say this is the most magnificent hotel we have had the
privilege of staying in. From the first moment stepping into the hotel, we were treated royally. Not only were we checked in early but they took care of our every need, even storing our luggage while we hiked the Inca trail. The restaurant was equally as classy as everything else, with every care taken to ensure our palettes were satisfied. I thought the interaction between the chef and ourselves during dessert was wonderful and added a warm and homely touch. The staff were thoughtful and genuine and topped off what I thought to be a truly magnificent experience. I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough to anyone thinking of staying in Cusco, and we cannot wait to visit again. To the staff thank you for and unforgettable memory.

Regards Steve & Maria

Room Tip: The junior suite and presidential suite are well worth the money to anyone looking for a high class...

My son and I stayed here on our recent trip, before and after our Machu Pichu trek.
What a great place...full of ambience...great staff, couldn't do enough, brilliant.
Lovely bar area...Pisco Sours went down well!...breakfast was perfect...such a huge range of things to try and enjoy...we had 2 different rooms, and both full of character, and you could picture the monks living there years ago...a haven of calm in a very busy and exciting City...everyone should go there !

While a bit overpriced, the hotel has charming rooms and courtyard, is very well appointed, staff helpful and it's easy to walk to all sites and many restaurants in downtown Cusco. Our rooms faced the street in front of the hotel, but it doesn't get much traffic and was not noisy (not a room with a view, however). The rooms were free upgrades and had two levels, with the top level being in essence a living room. We were told Oxygen was piped into the room.

Excellent breakfast, albeit not quite as good as Sanctuary Lodge (which is far more expensive). When our flight to Lima was cancelled by LAN (as apparently happens fairly frequently), the concierge was very helpful and spent a lot of time rebooking us.

Okay, everyone has what they like and what they don't like. Well, that said, this hotel is pretty amazing. We stayed in a former monk's room but it had all the modern amenities. It is in a great quiet area (the shops right outside the entrance in the square are pretty decent for alpaca type gifts - and we looked at as lot of shops in Cusco and surrounding area). The rooms are heated, very quiet, great amenities. The only downside is you are staying at 13,000 feet above sea level - so breathing takes some getting used to. The dinner and breakfasts we had here were realllly good. Breakfast is a tremendous buffet. Dinner is in an amazing room - the only downside is the no pictures of the room rule. All the staff - front desk, restaurant, bell - were wonderful They prepare the desserts at one end of the room in view - approach then and ask and they will possibly let you help prepare your dessert (that is a great photo opportunity). The hotel is pricey - but you knew that before you clicked on this review.

My family stayed here in May 2013. The room (suite) itself was absolutely luxurious (among the best that we have stayed in); bathrooms, bedding, toileteries, art, comfort, cleanliness, service, everything is top notch. The property is beautiful beyond words, the breakfast excellent, service at breakfast varied based on how busy it was. We did not eat other meals at the hotel.

Our room faced the front of the hotel, with a parking lot view (actually not what you imagine, nice cobblestoned, small lot with surrounding shops, mountains in the distance). The problem was the noise, with car alarms shooting of in the early morning, car reversing "music", etc. Unfortunately one day there was a huge street festival with incredibly loud music right in the square adjoining the lot. This is probably not a frequent occurence, and we enjoyed it for the insight into the life of the locals. But we had reached a frustration point about the noise. We would recommend requesting a room in the back.

Two suggestions for the management:
1) The luggage of people arriving and leaving is sitting in the main courtyard, by the lobby entrance. This makes for a sense of impermanence all the time (while that is a reality, perhaps fewer reminders would be better). Maybe a room on one side to hold the luggage out of sight would add to the relaxed feeling.

2) While we were there they had a medical meeting/ conference going on, with one side of the main courtyard occupied by posters etc related to this. This too takes away from the ambience. I wish hotels of this level would not allow commercial activities, or would have spaces that were well separated from the main areas where such activities could happen without spoiling the ambience for vacationers/ honeymooners, etc.

While these sound nit-picky, these come to mind when one is paying a steep price.
PS: sleep quality rating is based on noise level, rather than comfort of beds.
