“Pure luxury; one of the most beautiful hotels I have ever seen.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

We stayed here for two nights in June; could have stayed a week. The hotel architecture is historic and stunning. The rooms are large, full of beautiful detail, and well appointed. Breakfast overlooking the magnificent courtyard was a wonderful way to wake up. As we had arrived late, we had great wines and tasty bites in the impressive and cozy library bar. They have a grand chapel. This is a gorgeous property.

Their service is stellar, with every request politely and efficiently handled. The location is ideal with a short walk to the central plaza with the Cathedral, shops and restaurant.

We will go back to Machu Picchu, and will return to Cuzco for more Inca sightseeing. When we do, we will return to the Hotel Monasterio as well.

Room Tip: This is very expensive hotel, but so worth it because of the location and its amenities. Half of th...

I had read all of the reviews... and sadly, I was not impressed. Granted, the property/public areas were lovely with the expansive lobby/bar, multiple courtyards, paintings all around, and historical perspective. The staff were always willing to greet you enthusiastically in the halls; though rarely by name, even at the front desk where you turned in your key in multiple times a day. However, the actual room was less than average both in terms of size, view, bathroom and overall 'luxury'. It frankly could have been any hotel chain room. Frankly, I have stayed at much nicer Fairmont and St. Regis properties where both the public areas and the actual room are both lovely/stunning. The unremarkable/dull room dragged the rest of the historical property down in my estimation. I expect more from an Orient-Express property.

This is one of the most beautiful hotels I have ever been to. Stunning lobby, restaurants, courtyards, extraordinary chapel, nice, comfortable rooms and bathrooms, impecable service, amazing breakfast. It is pricy (Coca Cola is $6 USD!), but again, the property is so beautiful and it is so well run that in the end, it is worth every penny.

This property is magnificent in every way, the beauty and scale is an astonishing visit to the world of the 1500's. As we enjoyed tapas and drinks next to the fireplace, we felt like we were in an incredibly beautiful museum. The delicious breakfast in the gorgeous, sun filled courtyard with live guitar music made us want to linger much longer if it were not for our scheduled tour to the Sacred Valley. We slept soundly in our spacious, quiet, beautifully decorated room. We stayed two nights but would have loved to stay longer. The staff was thorough, engaging, and very professional which we find to always be the standard with Orient Express properties.

Room Tip: We did not choose one of the more expensive rooms and were very satisfied with our choice. We thoug...

The interiors of the hotel is spectacular with two open air courtyards. Located just off the main historic square but on a quiet side street, its just at the foot of the walk up to the artsy, lively San Blas area. The included breakfast every morning was the best we had one our tripw ith wonderful made to order omlettes and quinoa pancakes.

This was a beautiful property, originally built in 1595 as a monatery over top of a former Inca ruin. All the rooms are unique - many tucked in nooks and crannies. We had an interesting room at the roof line, up some stairs, with a separte odd "tunnel" running the length of the room behind us with a little window - perhaps a monk's prayer space? In any case, the room was spacious, comfortable, had plenty of light, a nice large window with a view of roofs and Cusco hillside, and modern amenities in the bathroom. One of the unique features of the hotel is its chapel, with very beautiful paintings and altar. Another unique feature is that most of the hotel's rooms are oxygenated, to help guests acclimate to Cusco's high altitude. The hotel also offered coca tea in the hotel lobby, which the locals drink for the altitude.

There are a number of little shops in the square on which the Hotel is located - good shopping and you can bargain. We enjoyed Alpacas Best - some lovely alpaca wool items there!

Even though we did not have very good weather during our two- day stay in Cusco, the hotel was comfortable and there are lovely rooms with fireplaces around the reception area which are great for enjoying a cup of tea or glass of wine if you don't want to sit in your room.

The hotel has two restaurants - both outstanding. The Illory was in a lovely dining hall. Lunch offered a splendid buffet with numerous regional specialties, and a wait staff anxious to please - and to explain the various dishes.....all delicious! Breakfast is also a treat with just about anything - both hot and cold - you could wish.

We loved our stay in Hotel Monasterio and would definitely recommend it!

Room Tip: They are all so different, it would be hard to pick one. However, if you do not wish to have to cli...

Our well-heeled friends all said that we have to stay in the Monasterio. Well, they were right. This hotel is beautiful, the service is gracious, the rooms are luxurious, and the surroundings are serene. This hotel is not for the scruffy back-packers you see in the town square, This hotel is for grown-ups who want to luxuriate while the are roughing it in Cusco. One night we enjoyed the hotel's bi-weekly opera night, with singers performing during dinner. Opera, great food, a glass of wine -- heaven.
