“Inca Trail and Machu Picchu are amazing but Enigma Travel fell short in many ways”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2015 NEW

I want to be clear: the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu are an experience of a lifetime if you're interested in this kind of thing and in good physical shape. Amazing. BUT we were very disappointed in the agency we selected for our trek: Enigma Travel. My main criticism is that they marketed and sold us on one trip, then changed the itinerary 2 weeks prior to departure, which significantly diminished our overall experience. They claimed this was due to campsite closures on the Inca Trail but when we got to the campsite that was supposedly closed, there were multiple other groups with other trekking companies camping there. The result was that Enigma squeezed our 4 day itinerary into 3 days, which was physically exhausting, and apparently they do this on a regular basis! For example on day 1, instead of trekking 11 kilometers, we trekked 16 kilometers, very steep uphill trail after waking up at 4am and taking a bus from Cusco. When we arrived through the Sun Gate in Macchu Picchu at the end of day 3, it was a magical moment but then we had to rush down to make the bus to our final campsite. We barely had time to take pictures. Also, our last night, instead of camping on the Inca Trail, they had us camping in a horrible campsite which we had to bus into. This ruined the experience of trekking into Machu Picchu because we ended up taking a bus into Machu Picchu like everyone else.
Enigma positives: we had a fantastic group (luck of the draw), good guides (Ludwig and Anthony), the food was good.
Enigma negatives: not trustworthy, not truthful, didn't care about the welfare of the group, changed the itinerary at the last minute which changed the experience.

“Inca trail”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2015 via mobile

I did the classic 4 day in a trail hike with Edwin. It was my first real hike and now I'm addicted. Our guide was perfect and tailored our trip for our small group.

Thanks

“Unbelievable Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2015

Enigma Peru is a first rate operation from top to bottom. Juan Carlos led us on the 4d/3n Salkantay trek. It was simply incredible. The scenery was beautiful along nearly the entire route. Juan Carlos was an excellent guide all the way from our first day in the mountains, through the jungle valleys, and finally in Machu Picchu. Our tents were always set up and waiting for us every night upon our arrival at the campsite and our chef Teo truly spoiled us with his meals. I was expecting a more rugged wilderness experience, but it was a joy to be pampered in such a manner. I highly recommend this organization.

“Excellent Inca Trail Hike”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2015

After much research we opted to hike the Inca Trail with Enigma, a choice we did not regret for a moment.
Lizbeth in Enigma's Cusco office patiently kept answering my emails and making the changes I requested.
Because we would be picked up from our hotel in Urubamba, Enigma arranged a separate briefing for us in Cusco. Our guide, Edgar, was there on time to go through the details and answer all the questions we had. Off to a great start.
Edgar is a very knowledgeable guide. He clearly loves what he is doing and is proud of his heritage. He never tired of pointing out things to our sons (ages 11 and 13) that he thought they might find interesting. He encouraged us all and helped us complete the trail in great spirits.
The food was beyond what can be expected on a camp hike. No plain food and stale sandwiches but warm, satisfying meals (even catering to the one vegetarian in our group) including desert (the 3 milk cake was unbelievable). The quantity was more than abundant too.
Somehow our porters managed to get the best spots at each camping location too. Looking out from our tents we saw nothing but the Andes (not other campers).
Three observations that may be helpful:
One, our schedule was modified because the campsite at Winay Wayna was closed to large(r) groups because of dangerous conditions caused by mudslides. What we would have hiked on the 4th day was added to the 3rd day. Initially I had reservations about this solution (made the 3rd day very long) but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Under the original schedule, we would have entered the Machu Picchu site through the Sun Gate at dawn. However, the sunrise over Machu Picchu is much hyped but during the time we went (March) it is nonexistent. The morning fog does not start to lift until around 11 (if it lifts at all). Instead, under our modified schedule, we entered through the Sun Gate around 2:30 in the afternoon, with Machu Picchu basking in the afternoon sunlight and perfect conditions to take the famed overview pictures. The time we would have spent hiking on the 4th morning was now spent touring Machu Picchu and by the time our tour was over the fog had lifted and we were free to explore on our own.
Two, if you decide to hike Huana Picchu, chose the later, 11 am, morning slot. Again, to give the fog a chance to lift.
Three, if you hire a porter, he will not carry just your stuff. Instead your bag is added to the other stuff a porter is carrying. So you do not need to have your belongings in a neat backpack, a duffel or other carrier will do.

“Excellent experience with Enigma”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2015

We did the 4D 3 N trek with Enigma it was really good. Well organised, food was lovely, porters well organised and our guides, Ozzie and Elvin excellent.
If you are considering doing the Inca Trail IMHO you cannot go wrong with Enigma. We were lucky as we had a great group of fellow hikers, no moaners or whiners, everyone got along and it was amazing to get up and walk into Macchu Pichu on the last morning.
Only one tiny negative point, I think we felt quite tired after the hike and early starts so probably didn't fully appreciate Ozzies lecture at MP. Sorry Ozzie!
TIP - take walking poles with you and thermals for the chilly nights.
