I want to be clear: the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu are an experience of a lifetime if you're interested in this kind of thing and in good physical shape. Amazing. BUT we were very disappointed in the agency we selected for our trek: Enigma Travel. My main criticism is that they marketed and sold us on one trip, then changed the itinerary 2 weeks prior to departure, which significantly diminished our overall experience. They claimed this was due to campsite closures on the Inca Trail but when we got to the campsite that was supposedly closed, there were multiple other groups with other trekking companies camping there. The result was that Enigma squeezed our 4 day itinerary into 3 days, which was physically exhausting, and apparently they do this on a regular basis! For example on day 1, instead of trekking 11 kilometers, we trekked 16 kilometers, very steep uphill trail after waking up at 4am and taking a bus from Cusco. When we arrived through the Sun Gate in Macchu Picchu at the end of day 3, it was a magical moment but then we had to rush down to make the bus to our final campsite. We barely had time to take pictures. Also, our last night, instead of camping on the Inca Trail, they had us camping in a horrible campsite which we had to bus into. This ruined the experience of trekking into Machu Picchu because we ended up taking a bus into Machu Picchu like everyone else.
Enigma positives: we had a fantastic group (luck of the draw), good guides (Ludwig and Anthony), the food was good.
Enigma negatives: not trustworthy, not truthful, didn't care about the welfare of the group, changed the itinerary at the last minute which changed the experience.
