“Casa Familiar”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2011

Went to this palace on either side of Macchu Picchu for a few nights each time. Found it to be best value around for the private room (shared bathroom) we were looking for. Room itself very nice with balcony window out onto the street, tv and lovely exposed wooden floorboards, lots of space. Shower was typically inconsistent for this part of the world. Joe and Sonia are super nice and very, very helpful. This is their home, which is why it is marketed as a casa familiar, so there are kids around and you will feel the presence of the family around you. Party hostel it is not - safe, friendly home from home it is. Fancy a drink while your there, stick your head round the curtain of the (somewhat intimidating looking) watering hole directly opposite the front of the house - you won't regret the encounter with the locals which awaits you! Be aware this is not in the very centre of Cusco, it is 10 mins walk from the square, and while the walk is quite manageable, the main street that it sits off is not one of the better, cleaner ones.

Absolutely wonderful host Sonia, who has a lovely family, runs this hostal. Welcomed with a cup of coca tea after a long bus ride we likes this place from the very start. You stay with the family so feels more like a homestay. This was the best place we stayed in South America during our 2 months. Fantastic value, comes with a breakfast, comfortable bed, cable tv and shared bathroom. She allowed us to leave our bags when we went to Macchu Pichu for a few days. It's about a 10 minute walk to the main square, rooms to the back are best.
Can't recommend this place enough....

We are a young couple on a six month round-the-world trip. Llaqtayay has been one of the friendliest and most welcoming hostels of our trip, and we thoroughly recommend it.

The rooms and facilities are basic, but the beds are comfortable and towels, soap, wi-fi and breakfast are included. We paid 40 soles per night for a double bed with shared bathroom, which is *much* better value than the advertised prices for many similar places in Cusco.

What really sets Llaqtayay apart though is the friendly hospitality of owner Sonia and her family. She is genuinely welcoming and incredibly helpful (and not simply trying to sell you something, unlike many other hostel operators in tourist towns). We felt very at home at Llaqtayay, and would thoroughly recommend it to other travellers on a budget!

We spent in Llaqtayay all together 3 nights before and after our Machu Picchu trip and we were more than happy there. The host - Sonia really care about her guests well-being. Hot shower and towels are provided without having to ask for this. We also got simple but good quality breakfast included in the room rate which is served in flexible manner as far as timing is considered. We stayed in a double room which was spacious, clean and comfortable. All in great value for money. We had to leave Llaqtayay Family House one night before departure from Cusco due to lack of availability. We paid significantly more for much less quality. I highly recommend staying with Llaqtayay!

The place seems like a colonial era house; rustic room with creaky woden floors, balcony on the street, beams on the ceiling. It was great! No heat, but the alpaca blankets kept us warm on the chilly nights. Small tv in the room The bathrooms are shared, one upstairs, one down. The give you a little breakfast of toast, cheese, coffee or tea. Do not stay here if you want all the comforts of a hotel, you will only complain about this and that. For $15 a night, we loved it. They call this "Family House Llaqtayay", and that is pretty much what it is - Joe and Sonia are sharing part of their house with you. They are very helpful with taxis, books, etc. It's in an old residential neighborhood on a narrow cobblestone street, about 5 minutes downhill to the Mercado San Pedro, another 5 minutes to the Plaza de Armas. I would stay again!

I reserved a room in advance using their website's contact info.

Pros: Nice house. Cheap price. Beds are great. The cable TV is useful before sleeping. Shower is hot. I paid for their laundry service and my clothes never smelled better.

Cons: none here

However, nothing stands out more than the owners Sonia and Joe. They are pretty dam cool and very friendly. Joe picked me up from the airport via taxi and was a great source of information. He also arranged some tours and a taxi back to the airport.

I'm staying here again whenever I come back to Cuzco. Easy decision =)

My boyfriend and I ended up staying here 5 nights in total. The guest house is excellent value and Joe and Sonya the owners are ever so lovely and helpful and both have excellent english. We had two different rooms during our stay, both were spotlessly clean and comfortable with good cable TV channels and nice warm blankets. Breakfast is good too with fresh bread and some nice cheese and ham or scrambled egg . Good fast internet too Definitely recommended!
