“El Tuco Hostel, Cusco, Peru”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

The hostel was located around 12 min. from the main plaza. The staff was friendly and helpful with things to do, and it was no problem leaving our luggage there for 3 days or leaving at 5 o' clock in the morning. Breakfast was simple. White bread (as much as you wanted) jam, butter and tea. The kitchen had what you needed. Calm atmosphere, so not a place to hang out, but if you`re not there to party I recommend the place. The pillows were terrible though, and it was quite cold, especially in the kitchen, but the showers were always warm!

After reading the incredible reviews of this hostel and all of the amazing comments about Coco, I had high expectations for our stay here.
However; things were quite uncomfortable for us from the moment we checked in because Coco lied to us about the check-in time in order to try to make us pay for a night that we needed to cancel. He lied about the check-in time being 9am when in reality it is 10am. This time is displayed prominently in the hotel rooms. We ended up not having to pay for the room, but it necessitated an argument based upon his lie.

Perhaps he was just having a bad day. However, it quite soured our stay and instead of being the amazing Coco that was expected, it ended up being like many other places that try to take advantage of you at every opportunity.

As far as the hostel itself goes, it is quite basic and charmless, a good distance from the center. There are certainly other better options in this price range closer to the center, with honest staff and nicer quarters.

We stayed in El Tuco for four days overall (either side of our Inca Trail) and the hostel is lovely. Coco is both accomodating and helpful. Lovely hot shower and spacious romos. Be prepared to wash your own breakfast dishes and bring your own soap and towels (although you can purchase there too). Highly recomendable and location is good.

We stayed here two nights before leaving to the Inca Trail and another night upon our return back to Cusco. Coco instantly makes you feel at home. The place is nice, and clean and in a quiet location just a short walk from the center of town. It was Peru's Independance day the night we arrived and Coco started making drinks in his personal bar. We shut it down at 3am. Sooo many Pisco Soursssss. If I make it back to Cusco, I'll be staying here again. What's up Coco?!?!

We stayed in Cusco for over a week and stayed in a double ensuite here. Definitely one of the best hostels of our trip.

It's really clean. The beds are comfortable. And the room was very spacious - one of the largest, for the price, I've had in a long time in South America.

The breakfast is the usual fare - but with a healthy supply of different teas. And the kitchen is well stocked. The place also does laundry at a decent rate. Good wifi.

Location wise it's in a safe and convenient area. It's not in the very heart (i.e. not by the main square), but that is something of a bonus - it's definitely close enough to walk to in 10 mins, while being just out of the way of all the hustle & bustle to relax. There is also a very large supermarket 2 mins walk away.

But the biggest selling point are the staff - helpful, upbeat, efficient. The main event is Coco - really good humoured, always there for assistance and advice.

A great bonus is the occasional free Pisco Sour night he puts on: He opens a little bar in the basement and shows off his skills. And he does a fantastic Pisco Sour (he's always happy to explain how!)

Top marks from me. I'd happily stay there again.

I stayed at El Tuco Hostel for several nights in May. The hostel is run by a friendly gentleman named George (Coco) who immediately makes you feel at home as soon as you arrive. He's really chill, knowledgeable, accommodating, and speaks excellent English. The rooms are very clean, as are the bathrooms. The facilities are good and as is the breakfast. The hostel itself is very charming, quite, and very secure. A short/moderate walk to the tourist areas, it's really a great option for the value conscious traveler.

El Tuco is an excellent hostel, rooms are very clean and the showers are nice and hot. The staff here is very friendly and offers great advice on what to do in cusco. It is a short walk to the main tourist area. I highly recommend this hostel.
