“Great hostel, comfortable rooms”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2012

We loved this hostel! The location is good, not too close to the main square so it's nice and quiet. Breakfast is filling, with eggs, cereal, bread and more on offer. The staff were fantastic, Magda is a major asset to Marlon's House in Cusco - she's brilliant! Wifi can be a bit flaky and it gets a little colder at night, plus the courtyard can be loud sometimes.

Room Tip: Try and get a room away from the courtyard if you want a bit of peace and quiet after hours

the room was good, location was great. The hot water was inconsistant. 5 minutes into my shower, the water would get cold. Also, it was often difficult to find someone at the front desk. I rang the doorbell (there's no other way to get their attention) several times, and often waited over 10 minutes before I just left. breakfast was great though- eggs, bread/jam,tea. AND it's from 6-10am.

the travel agent was nice but not knowledgeable. we booked our salkantay hike thorugh her because she gave us the best deal. she did NOT tell us however that you need a separate ticket to hike up Macchu Picchu Mountain (also true for the other mountain). She also did NOT tell us that the mules would not be traveling with us (or carrying our packs) the fourth day. no matter where you book your hike (unless you book it with an expensive place like llamapath, which seems to have small groups and very luxurious hikes) you end up with the same group.

Room Tip: don't get a room on the first floor because its only a few feet from the common area and the bat...

Marlons is good value Hostel. We opted for private en-suite, which was small and lacked storage space. It is suited to short stops for backpackers, but we had longish stay and are not backpackers. The main problem is that all the rooms open onto a central courtyard, (which is very colourful), but means that you can hear everyone coming and going at all hours. Staff are helpful. Location is quite good. We stayed here coz of personal recommendation, so I guess compared to other Hostels it could be good ?

Stayed here for a few nights to acclimatize before trekking to Machu Picchu and it was great. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful and the location was pretty central to the main plaza. They had quite a breakfast spread every morning and even woke up early the morning of our trek to feed us some breakfast and call us a cab. We stayed in the 6-person dorm and it ended up being fine, but I think there were also some private rooms if you want a bit more privacy as well.

The location was ok; several minutes walk from Plaza de Armas. The staff are friendly and the breakfast is good with tea, coffee, bread, yoghurt and fruit juice. The kitchen is for general use but it is tiny and placed under the satirs. The place is cleaned daily but isn't the cleanest. There were roadworks going on the whole time we were there and as the windows and shutters do not close properly, we were awakened early evry day with men at work. The bed covers were stained, the hooks on the bedroom wall fell off and the shower wasn't clean and the shower fired water in all directions. However, we booked a 5 day 4 night Salkantay trek with their travel agency. The information between their website and onsite brochure and staff all differed. We commented on this but there were always excuses. On the trek, the provided mattresses in the tent were old, ragged and so thin, my sleep was poor. The sleeping bag was too small and I was not able to zip it past my shoulders....the 1st two nights are very cold. Were were supposed to have hot water for washing every morning which did not happen. The breakfast on dat 4 was a piece of bread and a slice of cake and the last day was a small banana, a biscuit and a carton of juice. My rucksack had a cover which was lost en-route. From day 4 you have to carry all your own bags as the horses return to their base. The mini bus (a 12 seater) transported 19 on the inside and 3 on the rook rack. REally not good or safe. Best of all was my train ticket for return from Agua Calientes. They had booked it with a date for the following month and I was told that I had to go to the train station to sort it out myself. THere are loads of agencies around fro around the $200 mark and upward to $500. The choice is yours but make sure they do what they recommend and probably choose with a recommended agent but not this one.

Room Tip: Unfortunately all are on the roadside but up stairs if possible.

We stayed at Marlon's Hostel in Cusco for over a week. Upon arrival, they had given our room away so we had to go to another hostel for 2 nights even though our names were in the reservations book. The hostel is average but there is plenty room for improvement. The communual kitchen is tiny, the bedding was not clean and there is limited communal areas. Our double room was very small but sufficient and cleaned most days. Our biggest issue was with their travel service. We booked the salkantay trek for $210. The level of service and conditions were poor. Marlon's travel brochure and internet falsely advertise and we complained about it to them and they did nothing about it. We even emailed Marlon himself and he ignored our emails. Happy to take your money but not to give customer service. The trek was not as they advised, no water or cleaning facilities were provided, the sleeping mats were terrible and the list goes on and on. You hear people complaining about the travel service all the time at Marlon Travel so I strongly suggest you shop around as there is many options in Cusco and I am confident you can have a better experience than we did. Avoid Marlon Travel.

Marlon's had hot showers and good sized bedrooms. The breakfast was also nice in the morning with cereal, yogurt, bread, and hot drinks.

However, the room we stayed in was fairly dirty upon arrival. We stayed in a Double, but luckily the room had two twin beds in it (in addition to the double bed) because the sheets on the double bed had not been washed and were noticeably dirty... As a result, we ended up sleeping in the twin beds for the night. The bathroom also had weird stains on the shower curtain.
