“With Mercedes at the helm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2011

It was the highlite of our 2 month long South America trip. Mercedes is the most accommodating host, she looks after you, as you would be a member of her own family.
She gives you every help you need, regardless if it is involving a trip to go somewhere, or if you not feeling well, shopping,restaurants-whatever- she will be there for you to help. I know why her palce is also called "Mamma de Casa". She is like a Mum to everybody.
Thank you Mercedes

From the owner to every staff person, the folks at Girasoles made sure our trip was perfect. When I return to Cuzco, I will be staying here. We got 5-star service for hostal price. The location at Girasoles is easy walking distance to the square but down a nice quiet street. We stayed at much fancier places during our 2 weeks in Peru but Girasoles stands out for the people who run the place.

The actual rooms were "clean" but definitely showed a lot of use. The second floor rooms were a little better (didn't smell like sewage, unlike the first floor rooms) and showed "a lot of use" -- plus, we had the pleasant wake up call of the rooster. To the hostal's benefit, the bathrooms were "newer-tiled" and were impeccably clean -- though the reliability of "always hot water" is questionable at best.

The plus was that this is "mostly" centrally located, a few blocks from the plaza - and the breakfast was hot and decent. I would not stay here again.

Girasoles is clean and comfortable. It is tucked away on a quiet little street. The room service is excellent and the room was always fresh when we returned. If you are interested in learning more Spanish, the staff is very generous with their time. Mercedes is the owner of the business and she and her staff made sure that we saw all the best spots. If it hadn't been for them, we'd never have visited Tipon, a true gem. I highly recommend the place.
The mornings are a lot of fun at the place. You really feel like a member of the family during breakfast.

From the moment Mercedes (the owner) met me at the airport I knew this would be a good place to stay. It is only a short walk into the main plaza yet in a quiet location. The rooms are plain but there was always hot water. The included breakfast of bread, eggs, jam and coffee or tea was yummy. Tea, coffee and coca tea were always available. I stayed a total of 6 nights between my Inca Trail trek and Lake Titicaca. Mercedes also arranged my trip down to Puno and Lake Titicaca including homestay and it was perfect.

Mercedes and her staff go the extra mile to improve your stay in Cusco. The hotel is very quiet due to it's location on a narrow dead-end street. Large windows yield bright, cheery rooms (we sampled 3 due to our coming and going) with fine views. They can be chilly if the weather is cool. If so, request a heater! There is a rooftop courtyard, we used it to stargaze. The hotel is locked at all times, but a knock was always answered promptly. I don't think that they really had a restaurant, but they have a kitchen and serve a nice breakfast, and coca tea on arrival or on request.

We booked the Hostal Girasoles primarily because of the reviews on Trip Advisor and at $40 a night we were not let down. One of the attractions was the reports on the owner Mercedes who spoke excellent english and met us as promised at the airport. This was our first time in Peru and we spoke no spanish. We spent three nights here and then came back for a night a couple of days later. The Hostal is slightly awkward to get to if you are travelling on your own. The access road is very busy and the Hostal is around 50 meters off the access road. For us it was fine as we were on a guided tour. At night we walked into the Plaza which took us around 5 minutes and we felt quite safe walking back after dinner. Internet access was fine. The room was also fine and the water always hot in the shower.
