This is an upmarket but very slow train journey that takes you from Cusco to Puno on Lake Titicaca. It takes about ten hours. (The journey is actually quicker by road and plane and just as cheap. ) It is however a must for train enthusiasts. The old traditional carriages are clean and comfortable, food and drink are freely available and largely free of charge. We were provided with an excellent breakfast (continental with choice of eggs) and a very pleasant afternoon tea of cakes and sandwiches. The lunch however was disappointing as we found the main course (trout) to be overcooked to the point of being inedible, and cold on its arrival at our table. However the journey reveals the most beautiful and variable scenery and an insight into the rural life of indigenous people that are seen enroute. The high altitude at La Raya (5800metres) visibly affected some people who got off the train to visit the market. Moving at a snails pace through the middle of the bustling market in Juliaca was quite an experience.
