Although the Casa de Melgar provides basic accommodation, it is well located for the city centre and restaurants. The rooms are housed in and around the quirky 18th century building along with a few artisan craft workshops.
With a little effort, more could have been made of the breakfast area looking out on to the pretty garden.

Pros:The hotel is very well located and it has nice social areas, the rooms are big enough, the breakfast is plentiful and the gardens are beautiful.
Cons: there was no hot water the night we arrived, we called the staff but they never told as if the solved the problem until we tried again the next morning. The gentleman at the front desk told us when we arrived that we had to pay in CASH, because there was no credit card service. The day we were leaving we saw other guests paying with credit card, so at the time of check out we asked again and they said we could pay by credit card but we would have to pay 6% more and using a different exchange rate from USD to Soles . I told the lady that we had booked on booking with a fixed rate in US, so finally she agreed to charge the normal amount.
The noise in the mornings of guests and staff walking around might be too loud for some people. Wi-Fi didn't worked in the room (it happened in other hostels in Peru)

Went there with my girlfriend for one night. Early check in was no problem at no extra charge. Early check out worked because we woke up the staff, sleeping in another room. Room and bathroom were ok (pretty clean) , hot shower worked after calling the staff. We had booked a trip the next day. Pick up was at 3am. We were promised some hot drinks and sandwiches by the staff the evening before but did not get anything. Wi-fi worked. Would go there when my other choices are not available. Price 53USD.

We stayed here in September. The gardens are a welcome retreat from the noise outside it's thick walls. The rooms were large and comfortable. However we had to ask for clean towels as they were not always changed. Breakfast was plentiful with lots of fresh fruit and juices and scrambled eggs. Easy walking distance to town square, banks and great restaurants.

We stayed for four nights in June and celebrated our anniversary there. We tried to make a reservation the prior day by phone but when we arrived there was no record of our reservation! Fortunately, there was a room available for us.

We arrived after dark and when we got up the next morning we were stunned by the beauty of the place and its numerous courtyards. Every where you look is a photo-perfect scene. Our room itself featured huge, vaulted ceilings and we loved the doors and windows with built in "shutters." The place is immaculately clean.

We did have trouble with hot water, which baffled us at first because the first night we had plenty of hot water. We discovered that the switch to our hot water heater was outside the room and someone (staff, we assume?) kept turning it off! Once we figured that out, we were much more comfortable. Unlike other places we stayed, the room had few outlets but the wifi was decent inside and excellent in the courtyards.

There was not a portable electric heater in the room like we encountered at other hotels, but this wasn't a problem as it didn't feel too cold in the room. The bed was very comfy with lots of warm covers. The staff was friendly. And we liked that we could buy a cold bottled Coke or Inca Kola! The breakfast was okay--can't really complain about it but also wouldn't "write home" about it.

The location is decent--although not super close to any one attraction, most destinations are a 10-15 minute leisurely walk. I was surprised by how busy Arequipa is--it definitely has a big city feel and this hostal is a welcoming escape despite being in the heart of it all.

My friend and I stayed two nights in this delightful converted monastery. The unimposing facade does not prepare you for the delightful and expansive hotel inside. Small courtyards, beautiful gardens, pots of flowers, artefacts, all add to the ambience.

The rooms were large and furnished with beautiful antiques. Beds were clean and comfortable. Bathrooms adequate. Our room, No 116, was a fair way from the reception, but it was a pleasure to wander through the courtyards and corridors.

Hostel was located quite close to the main historical sites, restaurants and the plaza. About S10 ride to the bus station by taxi.

Staff were helpful. We left our luggage there while we went on an overnight tour to the Colca Canyon, and were welcomed back two days later.

Breakfast overlooking the gardens was plentiful and varied.

My friend and I wanted a girly vacation, so we wanted a hotel that was comfortable and had personality. This place is an old monastery with interesting architecture and beautiful gardens. It's sweet and charming. The staff are very laid back and kind. We stayed here 5 nights, and loved it. There is plenty of hot water and water pressure which is impressive from a building as old as this. It is well located, just a few blocks from the plaza de arms. The breakfast is bread, cheese, jam, deli meat, scrambled eggs, coffee, fruit, and yogurt which is pretty nice since it is included in the price. The wi-if works in the bedrooms. I was able to get work done.
