“Fuerte”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2012

This seems to take a back seat to many of the other options for excursions in the area and I think it tops most. It is most certainly better than the Colca canyon. This is a relatively accessible mountain and provides you with a fair shake to surpass the 6000m mark which means that while it doesn't require any exacting technical prowess, it is still a buttkicker. You will most likely need crampons which along with all gear you can rent or get included depending on your company. This will be a very full day and a half at some serious altitude and requires some fortitude so dont let the sales-people talk you into this "cake walk". My girlfriend and I are very fit and heavy duty exercisers and this still had us questioning our fitness at times. 6 hours up and two hours down mean that this is a very steep mountain to climb. Good luck, the pictures are worth it.

“Very interesting but beware of "Peru adventure tours" agency”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2012

Going up at 5400m. with ease and power, suddenly one of the rented boot from the agency broke in 2 pieces forcing us to go down with difficulties. At this altitude it could be really dangerous to have such bad material rented (frostbite etc..). The tour operator "peru adventure tours jerusalen 410 arequipa" doesn't want to fully payback. TAKE YOUR OWN EQUIPMENT !!

“Well worth the effort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2011

Chachani is labeled as one of the easiest mountains over 6000meters.
It is recommended to engage an agency to organize the transportation and a guide as the climb starts in the middle of the night.

The climb can be done either as two days expedition where the first day you are driven for approx.2,5 hours from Arequipa to the parking lot at the altitude of 5000m. Then you will hike for two hours to the base camp at the altitude of 5300m. you can aclimatize at the base camp, go to sleep early and the climb to the top starts at around 1-2 am.

The second option is to leave Arequipa around 23.00, arrive to the base camp and start the climb at around 2 am. This approach is longer but does not involve an overnight at the base camp.
The climb is long, not technical, requires a good aclimatisation and stamina but is well worth the effort.
After we caught our breath on the top, we were rewarded by lovely views of the mountains of Angel, Fatima, Misti, Pichu Pichu as well as Arequipa.

The trip can be organized by many agencies in Arequipa, but before the trip, be sure to check all the equipment.
