“Beautiful B&B retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2009

Casa Arequipa is a beautiful bed and breakfast just ouside the center of the city. We stayed in the Balcony room for a week in January and had a wonderful experience. The room itself was bright and classicly decorated, and the bathroom looked to have been recently renovated. The staff was very helpful with directions, dinner suggestions, laundry and calling taxis. Breakfast, which is served up on the terrace every morning, was delicious and included bread, fruit, avocado and eggs.

The thing I liked least about Casa Arequipa was probably its distance from the city center. However, cabs are plentiful in Arequipa and arrived to the hotel within five minutes and cost only 3 soles ($1)

Casa Arequipa is a lovely B&B located 15-20 minutes walk or a 5 minute taxi ride from the Plaza. The rooms were wonderful, breakfast was great. We appreciated the wi-fi availability in our room (during our trip we stayed at other places where wi-fi was advertised, but available only in the lobby)
Vanessa, at the front desk, was exceptionally helpful. The shower curtains/ bathtub were just something we couldn't work around - no matter what we did, water flowed out and around the tub. Very frustrating, but Vanessa was really sweet - got us new towels and cleared up the floor.
We were in Arequipa for X'mas, returning to Lima a day later and we asked for Vanessa's suggestions with day tours. She went out of her way to contact tour guides (even though we worried that most people would not be available the day after X'mas), and arranged tours for us.

Another great find was our Colca Canyon guide: Blanca. She was a fountain of information, delved into the history and geography of the country, the culture and anything else we wanted to know. Our guides all around Peru were pretty good, but she was by far the best. She is a registered guide with the tourism agency in Arequipa - ask for her!

  • Liked — Blanca: tourist guide and Vanessa at reception
  • Disliked — Water from shower curtain/ bathtub on floor

Casa Arequipa is an amazing little bed and breakfast right off the Plaza del Armas in Arequipa. Myself and two traveling friends stayed there for two nights while touring the country and it was hands down our best hotel experience. The rooms were stylish, clean, and comfortable. The common area in the foyer was hospitable and we appreciated the free wireless access. I utilized the laundry service while there- the cheapest of any of the hotels we stayed at, and they did a great job with my delicate sweaters and other items I wouldn't usually entrust to a stranger.
The complementary breakfast was AMAZING! Fresh fruit, great personal attention, and eggs cooked to order.
The staff was really sweet and accommodating. I believe we were the only guests (or close to) for our stay so we got great personal attention.

Only down sides:
The neighborhood was fairly noisy, but no more so than everywhere else we stayed in Peru.
Our TV wasn't working- we would have mentioned it to the staff, but we were so content with hanging in the lobby and around we didn't really need the TV. This seemed to be a temporary problem, and I wouldn't let it deter you from staying there.

I could live in this B & B, I truly loved my experience there!!!

Casa Arequipa is the kind of B&B that I would want to own if I were running my own place. It is located in a quiet residential neighborhood just outside of the main square (10 minute walk from the plaza, or a quick $2-3 USD cab ride). The rooms and common areas are stunning, and the people who work there could not be nicer. It's the little touches here that really make it stand out - very fine linens, laptops for loan, turn-down service, etc. It is a good value (we paid $65 USD/night). I would recommend a room on the 2nd floor rather than the first because the lobby noise can travel to your room. Breakfasts are excellent and served in a sun-drenched rooftop dining room (indoors). I felt like I was staying in a much more expensive hotel. The best thing, by the way, was that we were leaving the hotel for one night (to spend a night in the Colca Canyon) and returning to Arequipa. We asked the hotel if we could pay for the previous nights and their response was, "but aren't you coming back tomorrow? Wouldn't it be easier for you to pay at once at the end?" Why yes, it would be easier, but who would have thought that the hotel would put our needs before theirs? That is just the way that the hotel treats their guests at all times.

We stayed at the Casa Arequipa for 3 nights in October, 2008 and we absolutely loved it. The staff was incredibly sweet and helpful. The room (we stayed in the Honeymoon Room) was clean and comfortable. The breakfast (served in a pretty room on the roof) was delicious. My husband got sick one night and the staff was wonderful about helping me find somewhere to order in chicken noodle soup for him. Overall it was a terrific experience and we highly recommend it.

We stayed at Casa Arequipa for 5 nights and had a wonderful experience. We had the honeymoon suite on the first floor (UK), which has a massive bed, crisp sheets and a bath: luxury at c. $95 a night. A la carte breakfast is superb with the best bread we have found in a month in Peru.

Vanessa on reception is a fountain of knowledge and extremely efficient. One elderly guest had decided to trek the Colca Canyon without a guide and CA staff were so concerned about him they called people they knew at the various villages along the way to check on his progress!

Only minor criticims are that it can get cold in the room so asking for a portable radiator may be necessary. Also, there is some noise pollution given that all rooms give onto the lobby, but those on the ground floor must be worse.

Be careful about climbing Chachani (6,075m) with Roy, a local guide we were introduced to through the hotel. He is very friendly and energetic, but he massively downplays the difficulty of the climb to the summit. We are fit and acclimatized and it still took us almost 10 hours to the summit, and 4 back down. One of our party had to descend because of symptoms of cerebral oedema and it was only because there happened to be another guide on the mountain that this person was accompanied to a lower altitude. Added to which, Roy´s equipment is not the latest.

Very nice stay in a lovely hotel close to the city centre. The rooms are very big and stylish and the service is amazing. Very good breakfast on the top roof of the hotel. Free tea and laptops all the time. The area is very nice as well and nice walking distance to town.
The rooms at ground floor can be a bit loud , but are bigger than the other.
Our best hotel in 4 weeks Peru.
