“Excellent Arequipa Base”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago

My wife and I just completed a two night stay at this property. The room, a suite, was beautiful and spacious. It was clean and quiet. The overall hotel property is set on spacious grounds away from the noise and hustle of the center of the city. Although some may prefer to be in the city center, they should think this through carefully due to the street noise that can be experienced in those properties. La Libertador is a quiet oasis but a mere S/6 ($2 USD) taxi ride into the town center, an extra 30 cents at night.

The pool deck is spacious and comfortable with ample shade. There is al fresco dining on the pool deck, and we had lunch at the hotel several times, twice on the pool deck and one in the cocktail lounge. Service was excellent in both locales... waitress Jennifer and the waiter in the bar whose name I don't recall.

Breakfast buffet was included in our rate, and there is a selection of fruit, cereals, juices, pastries and breads, eggs any way you want them, bacon and sausage as well as pancakes with maple syrup. There are also various hams, cheeses and smoked fish. It was more than adequate, and it was a pleasure to watch the attentiveness of the staff in keeping the buffet table well stocked, clean and orderly.

Front counter staff were pleasant, informative and helpful, and spoke English without issues. They also acted as our concierge, confirming previously made dinner reservations and arranging a private guided tour and car up to the Colca Valley. Leandrea is one of the front desk staff who stands out, but her colleagues that we also dealt with were equally excellent. Not to forget to mention the very helpful Tomas at the front door.

The hotel has its own shuttle van to/from the AQP airport for a nominal $15 US each way for the entire party, not per person. The driver spoke English as well as we did, and was quick to point out the sights along the way. Taxis might be a few dollars cheaper, but could be more uncomfortable and even more dangerous with many local cabs having broken seat belts.

OK, with so many great things to say about this property and its staff, I do have a couple of minor items that I hope will be taken as constructive criticism by the management. First, there is no box of Kleenex tissues as one would usually see at a highly rated hotel, just a small pocket packet of tissues. Second, only one bar of soap... there should be one for the sink AND one for the shower/tub. Third, although I was told that we were entitled to two bottles of complementary water daily, only one was provided in the room. The other had to be requested each day.

The only other issue that I would like to point out is that I ended up making our booking with an online travel site as the English version of the Libertador chain's website did not seem to work very well.

All in all, a beautiful property, nicely landscaped grounds, an attractive pool area with both inside and outside lounge facilities, excellent wifi as well as house computers off the lobby (not used as the wifi gave us no issues)... a helpful, friendly and informed staff throughout the complex... and even its own family of alpacas on the grounds, not to mention Juanita, a giant tortoise. As we were departing on April 21, they were celebrating the hotel's anniversary with an elaborate self-catered function in a tent erected over the previous several days... looked like we missed a fun party! Feliz navidad!

Room Tip: Invest in a suite! A few extra bucks, but a world class room.

Arriving in late afternoon we were greeted by the bellman to take our luggage, proceeding to front desk we a very nice charming receptionist checked us in and pointed out all of the services included in our package...spoke very good English. I was more than pleased by our check in.
The hotel is absolutely beautiful, old charm in a colonial style, wood all over...this is my first time staying here & hopefully not the last time...unfortunately we were on a tour and couldn't stay longer, the grounds are very nice, nice pool, lounging outdoor areas for relaxing..to me, it looked like a nice place to enjoy while staying in the city..yes is not close to main plaza, but then again..is close enough via walking or taxi..the room was rather large, it could use a bit more lighting..air was ok..bathrooms nice..very comfortable beds..and I'm a light sleeper, so my night sleep was peaceful..
Dinning in hotel restaurant was good, service was pretty good...we didn't wonder off being we had an early pick up, still I would say the food was very good @ hotel restaurant...next day early AM..breakfast was good...juices...breads, really everything you can eat for an early morning...same restaurant service was good...our check-out was smooth.
Again I would consider staying here @ least 2 nights in order to enjoy pool & just the simple beauty of this colonial charm..we went looking for in house turtle but we didn't see her, I believe she was sleeping & in the am went looking for her again, believe she's a late riser..enjoy!Will definitely stay here again!!!

The hotel and grounds is nice but we had a few small experiences that weren't that great.

- once I ordered room service and it never came, I rang an hour later and they weren't sure who took the order so will have to re - do it, then waited another 30 mins for 2 x chicken soups.

- the toilet in our suite was spilling water across the bathroom floor 2 days in a row, we told them and they sent someone out both days. Obviously the first day they didn't fix it enough for it not to happen the next day.

- I personally thought the breakfast was average. Not bad, just looked at it every morning and thought boring... At some other hotels we stay at you go to breakfast the first morning and the breakfast is that good you straight away start looking forward to the breakfast meal for the rest of your stay. This wasn't the case.

- They had a pending transaction on the room where they charged my card on arrival to put a hold on the funds. MasterCard happened to be down when we were checking out so rather than just processing it once it came back up they suggested we go to an ATM to withdraw the $800USD and bring cash back to them...

Like I said the hotel itself was lovely, people and service good just a few things that held back and I thought it definitely could have been better.

Great hotel, nicely done up in communal areas, bedrooms have a brown colour theme so a bit dark, but otherwise comfy bed, we stayed one night in a standard room and then upgraded to a suite with hot-tub which was nice. Staff very nice and helpful. Great selection at breakfast. Prompt 24hour room service. 20minutes walk to the town.
Seems like this hotel is used for conferences and business stay overs - lots of businessmen/women having breakfast in the mornings.

We went in rainy season so didn't use the pool or outside Jacuzzi. 100 (?150) year old resident Galapagos turtle in the grounds, along with Llamas.

The only down side was the noise when we upgraded to the Suite - lots of traffic/trucks passing outside. Otherwise great hotel and will definitely stay again!

This luxury resort hotel is located in the southern Peruvian town of Arequipa. It is about a 20 minute walk to the central town square.

When we arrived, we were warmly greeted and we were pleased to discover that English is widely spoken by the staff here.

The hotel has wonderful curb appeal, and its grounds are well maintained.

Our room was very spacious, with good quality linens and comfortable beds. There is no AC but we were there during a cooler season, so this was not an issue.

The interior of the hotel is richly decorated, with animated frescos and elegant decor.

The breakfast buffet is very extensive, with a plethora of options, all made fresh. Eggs / omellets are made by a friendly chef while you watch. The various juices are freshly squeezed. Outstanding.

The outdoor pool is quite large, and designed for lounging. It was very clean and pleasant. Near the pool is the hotel giant turtle, who is over 100 years old. Great opportunity to get up close to such a fascinating creature, and a great photo op. Llamas and alpacas are also penned nearby to observe.

The dinners we sampled in the main restaurant were very good, and the service was refined.

Good advice can be found by asking the front desk staff for recommendations for restaurants and attractions. As well, excursions to the Nazca lines, the Colca Canyon etc can be arranged at the front desk.

Housekeeping was efficient and unobtrusive. Overall, customer service was attentive, friendly and professional.

Despite being in a third world country with expected poverty, we felt secure at the resort.

This hotel resort is an outstanding choice to base your visit to Arequipa, Peru, and we would enthusiastically recommend it.

As an aside, we were able to commission a water colour painting of a particular scene in Arequipa that we wanted to take home as a souvenir, at a very reasonable cost, from the artist who makes his living at the roundabout across from the hotel entrance. Otherwise, he had a good selection of paintings to purchase.

people are as every peruvian met, very welcoming and smily. service has been soft, a bit long, food excellent. check in and check out were long and very administrative, but rooms are wide and very comfortable. one bad comment is the level of noise as you may hear from your neighbour, or people in the corridor. Sometimes dogs were barking outside and police is using its siren to ask for someone opening a door for the car it seems.

We arrived to the hotel Libertador in Arequipa and were not supposed to check in until 3pm, yet the rooms were ready for us at 11.30am! The breakfast buffet was excellent, we always saw smiling faces ready to serve us, help us and direct us. One day we left at 2.30am to visit the Colca Canyon and our breakfast was ready for us at 2am! All kinds of breads, toasts, yogourts, cheeses, hams, marmalades, coffee, tea, infusions and fruit for us to take on our trip to Colca. The beds are all queen size a d very comfortable, the bedrooms very spacious and the bathrooms well stocked with shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, etc. Diwnstairs the entrance hall, the living ateas and dining rooms are very attractive. Being an architect and interior designer I am very picky about my hotels and I can say that the different ambiences are well decorated. The gardens were we had breakfast have lovely furniture and a swimming pool, they also feature a Galapagos 150 years old tortoise called Juanita. And llamas with their crias. I definetely reccommend this hotel, it is the best one in Arequipa!

Room Tip: All the rooms have two queen beds. Ours faced the gardens with the swimming pool.
