Carlitos and his team deserved very praise they get on this site. From meeting us right on schedule for a briefing at our hotel the previous day, to showing us a great restaurant in Arequipa town where the locals go to, and giving a brief orientation of town, to the actual trek ... Everything was perfectly organized.
The guide assigned to our small group, Marcel, was knowledgable, patient, passionate about the area, obviously well known and well liked by folks in the canyon (he should be ... he helped out in the kitchens of every place we had a meal in .. He's that kind of guy), and knows just how much to speak and when. Not to mention, there is a dog in Cabanaconde that will follow him to the ends of the earth!
The trek itself was well organized, with a home stay at Cosñirhua instead of the more common and touristed San Juan de Chuchu. The rooms were very basic, though there was hot water, the food was great, and the family we stayed with, Mauricio and Rufina were excellent hosts. Mauricio took us around his farm in the morning and we samples some of the freshest and tastiest produce we've ever seen in our lives. The Sangalle Oasis, while more touristy, is a great place to relax after a trek, and the pool was very refreshing too.
Tours in the Colca Canyon follow a fairly standard format and shared infrastructure, but we felt there was enough 'personality' in the way Carlitos and his team organize it and help us experience this place that their passion stands out.
