I stayed here twice. First for three nights and then after getting altitude sickness in Puno and Copacabana I came back for another three nights. When I came back there was nobody here but, as I had mistakenly taken the keys to the front door of the hostal and the room I had been staying in with me when I left, I let myself in and self-occupied the room I had before. It was strange to be in the hostal completely alone but the owners came back in an hour or so. In many places this would have caused a fuss but here it was treated with great humor. I loved it here.
The owners, Sonia and Francesco, are great. Francesco went out in the street with me one night when I wanted to take a taxi and made sure I got a registered taxi. He also went out and bought bread at 7am one morning as I was going rafting at 8am when the breakfast hours don't start until 8.30am. They are people who will put themselves out for you. Sonia even tried to find me a dinner date with a friend as I wanted a change from eating on my own.
It's not a swish, business hotel (thank God) and neither is the price. Its clean, good value, comfortable, soulful and Latin. If you want the equivalent of a MacChain hotel go elsewhere. It has a roof terrace...I stayed here twice. First for three nights and then after getting altitude sickness in Puno and Copacabana I came back for another three nights. It has a roof terrace and great views to the mountains and the volcano Misti. It also has a patio to sit in. I thought the location was excellent. Easy walking to the historic center and other interesting places in other parts of the city. Also very good wi-fi service - faster and more reliable than most of the cafes/restaurants I visited.
PS Just one block up on the same street from the Hostal at 221 Cruz Verde is a fantastic vegetarian restaurant, called Aquarius, that does not feature in the list of Trip Advisor places. It's supremely good value. A four course meal cost 10 soles which included a really good vegetarian version of one of the regional dishes - recotta relleno (stuffed pepper with slices of potato made into a pie with local grilled cheese on top). And their date pie is to die for!More
