“Very homey and comfortable hostel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 weeks ago

Stayed here for a few nights while doing the Colca Canyon trek. Staff were very helpful, although they didn't speak much english. As the Colca Canyon trek goes around picking people up at 3am, the staff were up at 3 to let me out the door and actually had to go to someone else's room to wake them up and get them to go on their trek which was quite nice of them.

Rooms were clean as were bathrooms, with great hot water. The courtyard was a really nice place to chill with other backpackers, as was the rooftop area/kitchen where they served a pretty good breakfast which is included in the price.

Wifi was decent and worked everywhere in the hostel as far as I could tell. The hostel is located 5-10 minutes walk from Arequipa's central square and there are plenty of shops, tour agencies and restaurants around.

I enjoyed my stay at home sweet home. The staff are friendly and is a decent breakfast included - pancakes, bread+jam and eggs. Its close to the centre and are lots of restaurants nearby or can use the kitchen in the hostel. Also has a tv area to chill out in.

I also booked the three day colca canyon trek with the hostel and thoroughly enjoyed it. The guide, Rafael, was very knowledgeable and spoke good English. And at 140pesos it was reasonably priced.

Pros: taxi pickup at bus station (but not for free), arranged Colca trek; breakfast

Cons: quite noisy (especially on Friday evening); sometimes hard to communicate (in English)

I recommend - good price/quality ratio...

We stayed here after we came back from the colca canyon tour. The room was nice, the hotel was quiet and the breakfast (bread, eggs and pancakes) was unexpected good with a great view if the mountain from the rooftop. Especially for the price.
The shower was hot and not just warm like in other places every tone of the day.
We really liked it.

Comfortable rooms, but quite cold and there was no heating system (we visited in July)
The hotel has a very nice rooftop where you can have breakfast (breakfast was nice)
The staff was very helpfull pointing some things on our map and helped us order a taxi
About 10 minutes walk to the city center (plaza)
We had a small room with no closet (not so comfortable), only one small table (were we put or clothes on)

I was in Home Sweet Home twice: first, I spend one week in 2012, and 10 or more days (but irregular) in 2013. With no doubts I can say it's the nicest and most comfortable hostel I've been in Peru, from all my trips. Me and my friends really felt like in home! The stuff is really nice and helpful, but they speak a little English, so it may be a problem for non-Spanish speakers. They can help you even after your check-out time. The rooms (every time I've chosen dormitories) are big and clean. The biggest advantage of the hostel is breakfast: really big, with eggs and pancakes, no only bread+jam, like in most cases. The common area is also very clean, you always can find another backpacker to talk with :) Bathrooms also so very clean, and with always hot water.
Hostel is not so close to Plaza de Armas, you have to take four or five 'cuadras', but for me it wasn't disadvantage. Thanks to this localization I know Arequipa better ;)
To sum up - definitely recommended! If I go to Arequipa next time, I will choose only Home Sweet Home!

Room Tip: I recommend dormitory no. 5 or 6, with huge windows ;)

My wife and I went to Flying Dogs hostel down the road from here which wanted 90 soles for a private room with shower/toilet facilities. It looked nice but it was significantly beyond our budget. The lady at their reception was decent enough to reccomend and point us in the direction of Home Sweet Home.
This place is great, with smiley and helpful staff, 24/7 hot water, a kitchen, clean rooms, comfortable beds, TV in the room (not all of them though), and we only had to pay 40 soles for a private room with a private shower and toilet.
They also offer travel guide services with very competitive prices.
I would highly recommend this place!
