“Mansion Alcazar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2012

The Mansion Alcazar is a historic mansion converted to a boutique hotel. It is one of the most spectacular boutique hotels in the world. We have stayed here on two occasions for a week at a time, when the prices were still quite inexpensive ($95 a night for two persons). Since the prices have gone up, we still visit the hotel every time we visit Cuenca, for drinks and dinner because of the spectacular old world atmosphere and personal service.
You will be greeted at check-in with complimentary champagne by Manuel. Manuel will be your personal butler. He also tends bar and makes high tea in a special area in the courtyard. He is a national treasure.
Everything about this place is up scale. The world class restaurant offers a different menu every day. Every room is different and authentic to the period. The common rooms and gardens are awe inspiring. This is truly an incredible hotel for those who can still afford it. This is not a large modern cookie cutter hotel. If you are looking for a family resort hotel, this place not for you.

I have stayed at this hotel three times and fall in love with it more each time. As one who has traveled the world I have stayed in a full range of hotels...from Timbuktu to Moscow to Sydney etc. Mansion Alcazar has the most charm, comfort, convenience and beauty of all. The staff is beyond helpful. It is my favorite hotel in all the world.

Room Tip: Ask for a large room on second floor.

The public areas and the garden are beautiful. Visit them, have a drink, maybe dinner but do not stay here. The rooms have lovely furnishings with a small double bed and no soundproofing at all. They give on to the common area, including piano, and are noisy from early morning to late evening. Some of the loudest offenders were hotel staff members. We were told by friends who were on a second floor suite that they had exactly the same issue with the noise.

Dear Guest,

We are very sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay at Mansion Alcazar, we care about all our guests and we offer them the best rooms and public spaces with a lovely musician who plays the piano once a week, and a beautiful fountain water in the lobby that usually is on until 10 pm, this may cause you the major sound that you complain of.

As Mansion Alcazar is a Luxury Republican house many of our rooms are conected by the central lobby, this is considered a great value for us since we care about to give every guest a pleasent experience in a unique place.

I hope you had enjoyed the rest of the time you traveled around Ecuador.

Best Regards,

Sandra Guzman

My wife and I were excited to visit Cuenca. We are very picky about our accommodations. I normally book hotels nine to twelve months in advance to make sure I get exactly what I want. My wife and I thought the Mansion Alcazar was great. We had a very nice suite. The breakfast and the bar are nice. The room and the common areas are furnished with unique pieces. There is a nice fountain in the sitting area. The folks all around are very nice. They help in any way to make your stay enjoyable. They helped us with tours and restaurants. If in town eat at the Santa Lucia Hotel. We went to the Caja National Park and rode the train up the famous Devils nose (ggod fun). My wife and I are planning another trip to Ecuador. Our intent is to go to Loja and visit Vilcabamba. We will fly into Cuenca and then drive to Loja. On that trip we will certainly stay at the Mansion Alcazar once again. Thank you.
