After staying in several Hostels and Hotels, this was the most relaxing. The courtyard, river and apartment provide a variety of places to relax. We enjoyed the Hummingbirds and the Gold Fish. The staff was warm and helpful. Buses and Taxies are right out in front! We spent two weeks at Apartamentos Torongo and hope they have an opening for us upon our return to Cuenca.

Room Tip: Consider whether you want to be near the river, street or in between....

We stayed for about 5 weeks Dec 2011 - Jan 2012 and enjoyed our stay. Do not expect luxury but do expect friendly, helpful staff and experienced ex-pats (mostly American and Canadian) to help guide you around Cuenca. And Tormenta, the guard dog, is wonderful and can bring a smile to your face.

The gardens are beautiful and peaceful. A great place to have a cup of coffee. There is even a small hibachi out by the river side so you can grill. Xavier and his wife as well as his delightful parents were very good hosts. Sara and Angelita take care of the housekeeping and the office and they are excellent. Manuela is the laundress and although she does not speak much English we were able to understand each other. If you have some extra room in your luggage, bring an extra towel or two.

The television had multiple English channels and among many choices we could watch Law and Order, Big Bang Theory and The Mentalist not just the Bloomberg channel as someone mentioned.

It was a place where we could get the feel of really living there. I would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: if you can't do steps, stay on the first floor. If you want quiet, perhaps the river side is be...

The pictures that we saw of the property were very out dated. The tree in the court yard was larger than the photo. Our room was at the back of the hotel right on the river which caused it to be damp with a bad smell in the kitchen and the bedroom closet. Hot water was sometimes an issue. One night we had steam instead of water, no shower that night. Most of the tile in the kitchen was cracked or loose and there was no oven to cook only a propane stove top and the refrigerator was very loud.

The hotel and cleaning staff were wonderful and very trustworthy and the hotel dog was a delight.

Sorry about the inconvenient, we had a broken pipe , that cause all the problems related to the smell and the lack of pressure in the shower. It took a while to find it because it was just an small leak . Problem is solve.
The kitchen is repaint, and the setting of it do not give us room for an oven, so we are going to keep with the kitchen top

My husband and I stay at Otorongo hotel/apartments on March 2 2012 for 6 nights. We visit Cuenca to look for places we will like to live when we retire early next year. The apartments are simple with every thing you need for a short or long stay. I enjoyed having a kitchen to prepare late snacks and make a cup of tea and sip it by the balcony looking at the garden and talking with other expat staying there. The owner Xavier is a great host, willing to help us and making sure we have a pleasant stay. You can feel the warmth of the Spanish people there. The staff take good care of every thing and will do your laundry for a very fear fee and also you can request for them to make you breakfast and serve you by the orchid garden. Our apartment was on the second level looking at the well groom garden with flowers pots and baskets all over the building. You can feel great energy there. Otorongo is pet friendly and there sweet dog Tormenta (Stormy) does not barked a lot, day or night. To go to the center of the town we walk and took our time looking at the river and every place in the way, stop and eat lunch at different restaurant every day. You can take the bus or flag a Taxi at the corner of the hotel. At night it was a very quiet street because is mostly residential. We recommend Otorongo and we will stay there next February for a few weeks wile we take our time to find a place to live.

Room Tip: Rooms by the river are the best but you need to do very early reservation, others looking at the gar...

This is a great option for a vacation in Cuenca, lovely hosts and very friendly, helpful staff. It is only a 10 minutes walk along the river to downtown and just a few blocks to a great restaurant although the kitchen in the apartment is great.

We stayed a week at Otorongo and had a 2 bedroom apartment. The Apartment was adequate but not very quiet. We had a room that had the bedrooms facing the busy street and it was not great for a quiet rest at night. They have a dog that is barking alot below the windows to our apartment not to mention the bus stops outside our room that add to the already large amount of road noise. It takes about 15 minutes to walk into the centre part of Cuenca and involves lots of stairs going up. Taxis are easily caught outside the apartments - I guess the benefit of being on a busy street. We paid $350 USD for a week and I'm aware that it is $60/night if not staying 7 nights. I would have to say that this is not great value for Cuenca accomodations considering the location, noise and bare bone accomodations. If you could get a room along the river, it might be a more enjoyable stay. Unless we could get a riverview room we would not stay at Otorongo Apartments

Thanks for the review, we had other clients, with the same opinion about the apartments facing the street, we are in the process of changing the windows for a double glass, aluminum frame , with a 90 % sound cancelation.
We had replace a couple already, and we are going to be done by the end of this week , by Friday may 4 th. All windows facing the street will be replace
Regarding the price is 350 divide by 7 nights by 4 people is 12. 5 USD I guess is a fair price for our facilities

My husband and I stayed 5 nights in Jan 2012 in Otorongo. It offers the advantage of a kitchen with full size frig, 4-burner stove, and hot water in the kitchen as well as bath, plus two bedrooms, and daily cleaning service that will even wash your dishes! The complex surounds a beautiful garden with a burgeoning orchid section. The location, on the River, is about a 20-min hike the center of Cuenca. During our stay the rooms were full of ex-pats from the US and Canada, mostly an older group of very nice people.

We would certainly return.

Room Tip: The rooms in the back have lovely views to the river and probably not the noise of the busy stree in...
