“acceptable, but no more”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

Maybe we hit an off-period, but we were a bit disappointed in this place. The room was okay - smallish and no real atmosphere, but clean with a reasonable bed. The staff were quite cool, doing their job but not one word beyond the essential. The atmosphere generally was a bit stiff and chilly, we never really felt "at home", and the service at breakfast was chaotic - we ate elsewhere the second day, even though the breakfast was included in the tariff. The location is good, so not a bad choice if you cannot get into the Hotel San Francisco, which is a similar price but much cozier.

Great service and superb location, very near the historic center, just two blocks north of the Plaza de San Franvisco and within walking distance of everything in the Old Town. Delicious full hot breakfast. Highly recommended.

We stayed at the hotel for three nights, arriving at 2.30am after really long queues at Immigration!
The staff speak some English and were really helpful - booking taxis/transfers and arranging a 'tour' to Otovalo ($80 for a taxi 8am-6pm).

The room (a triple) had plenty of space, a safe deposit box but no windows.
Beds, toilet and shower were all clean.

Breakfast was good - fruit, bread, ham, cheese, tea, coffee, juice and a choice of eggs.

Tea and Coffee available all day, but it wasn't always replenished

Wifi was good - available in the rooms.

The location was excellent, just a few blocks from the Old Town and we felt safe throughout.

We liked the feel of the hotel, built around a central traditional courtyard.

The only drawback was the way sound travels through the hotel - especially the front door-bell which seems to sound through the night when guests arrive late .... (sorry!)

Stayed with Hotel Catedral for 3 days and all I have to say is that the service was VERY helpful and accommodating to the needs of all four of us! They arranged airport pickup and drop off, the rate includes breakfast, and the staff (Fabian and Juan Pablo) recommended some awesome places to dine! Make sure you go to Hasta la Vuelta Senor!

We stayed here for 4 nights prior to heading to the Galapagos. The place was an excellent base to explore the old town. The staff was friendly and informative. I love that they told us to see the changing of the guards at the Presidential Palace.
They have a restaurant right beside the hotel which serves traditional lunch. We ate all our lunches here. For 3$ we got fresh juice, soup, and a main dish. It was simple and good. Breakfast was included, but it wasn't as good as lunch. I found it a little too greasy and honestly fried eggs every day was too much. How about a little variety? Other than that, this place was an excellent place if you want great value, friendly service, and quiet location in the Old Town.

We stayed 5 days in the old part of town before flying to the Galapagos. This part of Quito is the only place to be and is where the old Spanish Colonialists were based. Lovely architecture. The hotel is three blocks away from Plaza Grande where all the action seems to be. Down the hill and take the second right.

The front desk staff were fabulous and offered advice and suggestions on everything. They organized a day trip to Otovalo and Mitad del Mundo for us. The first was an excellent market experience. You need to bargain on prices! There are two Mitad del Mundos which is the equator line. The big fancy one was fascinating with dance performances, shops, museum etc. However it is in the wrong place! About 500 yards outside the compound is the small version and the real thing. You must go there. It is amazing the difference that a few feet either side of the line makes. There is a great experiment where they pour water down a sink on one side and it goes clockwise down the plug hole and then just a few feet on the other side of the line it goes down anti clockwise!

Breakfast was included at the hotel and there was always freshly squeezed juice. The security to get in the building was excellent. We were advised to be back no later than 11pm.

Take a left out of the front door down the hill two blocks to a restaurant on the right side called Vista Hermosa. Live music every night up on the rooftop with an amazing 360 degree view of the lit city. Try the Lomo a la piedra, flambed steak on a hot rock. The local salsa goes on everything and is amazing. We also dined at Hasta la Vuelta Señor in the Plaza Grande.

The rooms at the hotel are small but adequate. There is street noise so ask for one away from the street if available. The heater in the room worked well. The shower water pressure was excellent and nice and hot. Internet was wireless and good. There is a guest computer but I used my iPad.

The only problem was I had headaches for the first 4 days because of the altitude. Take things REAL slow walking up the hills until you get acclimatized.

This is not a luxury hotel but we really enjoyed our stay and the move for one night to the fancy Radisson organised by the cruise company was a let down in comparison.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street

After staying in many U.S. and European cities (so this is an objective review), I have to say this hotel, more kind of a hostel (a great hostel), provides all the facilities you could ever need: quietness, unsurpassable room attendant, hot water, heating, good complimentary breakfast, free high speed internet (physical PC you can use there and WiFi for your mobile devices), laundry, free local calls, wake up service, taxi service contact, clean and neat common areas and so on. There is a safe-deposit box in the room, but I can say you dont need it, all the personnel is honest and respectful, also the hotel in-doors and surroundings are pretty secure. It is advisable to bring personal hygiene items, and if you forgot it, just buy them durring the day near the hotel. The staff at the reception is very friendly and respectful, will resolve any questions or issue you have. Last but not least, there is a WONDERFUL restaurant called "Vista Hermosa" two blocks away (YOU HAVE TO GO THERE!). I stayed here for a week and it was great!
