“Zoologico de Guayllabamba”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2012

I loved visiting this zoo! The majority of the exhibits are of animals native to different parts of Ecuador, and it was a really nice demonstration of the great biodiversity Ecuador has. It's just a short drive outside of the Quito, and the landscape is very beautiful. In addition to the great range of animals at the zoo, there were also many beautiful plants. I doubtlessly would like to return in the near future. A visit to this zoo was a great way to spend a Sunday morning.

“Exceeded Expectations”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2012

Sometimes called the "Quito Zoo", it's well outside of Quito in Guayllabamba. The drive north takes you through an arid valley along the Panamericana. Upon arrival, we were sweetly surprised by how well run the zoo was and the kids frequently want to return.

“At least it was something different”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2012

Get the Metro bus to Ofelia bus station, 15 cents for ½ hour ride and then the ask for the Guayllabamba bus letting the driver know you want the Zoologico, about 90 cents for 1 hour. He lets you off beside some pick up trucks and it is US$1.50 for 5 mins to the Zoo, (don't walk, it's 1½ miles up and down). The Zoo itself has some interesting inmates; a tigrillo, leopard, condors, frogs, monkeys, lots more etc and is reasonably well set out. The bears were bored pacing around. A lot could be done here to make this place excellent. There is a cafe but it might or might not be open.
The bus ride is worth the journey though, you get to see a lot of the countryside and how people really live. Leaving the Zoo you need to 'phone the pickup trucks or ask one when they come to pick someone else up. If you wait and hope you could be some time.

“Not worth a long ride”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2011

The zoo is located in a site at about one hour drive north of old Quito. There are several ways to get there, and the driver has chosen the one through ugly Quitan industrial suburbs. Collection of animals is mediocre, and the conditions for animals are far from the best, especially for the giant tortoises. After seeing the wild life "as is" on Galapagos visiting the zoo makes you feel almost sick. We made a decision to never again going to a zoo.
