“Wonderful stay at the Mercure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2009

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Mercure for nine days in April. We got an amazing deal on our room but would have been willing to pay double what we did because we were so satisfied. The location of the hotel was definitely a highlight. It is in the heart of the touristy mariscal area and is within walking distance to great restaurants, bars, shopping, tour agencies, salons and more. Our room had a separate living and bedroom, a lot of space, balcony, mini bar, cable and it was very clean. I will say that the rooms are in need of an update but to me, that's really not that important. There is a good sushi bar and another good restaurant as well as a casino attached. The breakfast buffet was included and had a nice variety of food. The guest service was outstanding. We were so happy the entire time we were there and will definitely stay there again if we return to Quito.

We were quite pleased with our stay at the Grand Hotel Mercure. The staff was extremely helpful and it was a good place to base for our one night in Quito before heading to the Galapagos Islands.

Stayed in a 1 bedroom suite, where I managed to get a really good rate.
The hotel location is good, about 5 mins walk from the Hilton on Av. Amazonas.
Av Amazonas is fairly busy during the day, fairly quiet at night. I found a few people at night a little intimidating, but it's advisable to get a cab - which are very cheap.
Found the public areas to be very nice. The room was a little tired, large room, good selection of TV channels.
The hotel restaurant was extremely cheap - main courses ranged around the $6 mark, but empty each evening.
The hotel is very close, i.e. a couple of blocks away from some great bars, a little expensive for eating, but buzzing.
Police on horseback and with enough people and security guards from the bars visible, felt safe.

If you manage to get a good rate at this hotel, I would recommend it.

Nice business class hote, with lots of rooms, a bar, a casino all the amenities. We stayed here as part of a package deal for a trip to the Galapagos. Good value for the money paid.

The breakfast here was good, and included some nice local cheese and yogurt. They start serving breakfast at 5am, which is great if you have an early morning activity (e.g., mountain biking or a tour) to rush off to.

Very helpful concierge service, and they all spoke English well. I should mention that there was one problem with checkout... they wanted me to pay for rooms that I had already paid for in full! I argued with them about this, and we finally got it sorted out. If I hadn't argued with them, I would have paid double for my hotel bill. The hotel is clean and shiny, housekeeping is quite good.

The hotel is modern-looking in design, and does not have anything about it that suggest "Ecuadorian" or "Andean".

We spent one day checking out Quito and used a taxi for the whole day. We didn't walk to much from The Grand Hotel, and I don't think there's that much within walking distance anyway. The Grand Hotel is in the "new" part of Quito, and a lot of the tourist sites are in "old" Quito. Taxis in Quito are very inexpensive, by American standards.

The hotel does have a Business Centre where you can check your email, in case you didn't bring a laptop. The Business Center may charge you a small fee to use the internet. (We got the service for free as part of our tour package.)

Our room was clean and the bed was comfortable. We did have some ambient noise from the street below coming up to our room (on the 4th floor) throughout the night. If you are a light sleeper, be sure and ask for a quiet room.

We did a side trip to Otavalo Market (on Saturday morning) and that was really great and worth doing.

I also stayed at the Cafe Cultura Hotel, and overall I liked that one better. It's not as fance as the Grand Hotel Mercure, and doesn't have as many amenities, but it's more charming and quaint.

  • Liked — Very good value for what you get
  • Disliked — Dull decor, noise at night

Nice place to park after a hectic trip from Peru. I wouldn't use their Casino....just average. Food wasn't too bad either. There are several other eating places not too far from the hotel. Staff was friendly. On the whole, it was a nice stay.

Overall a good hotel for the price we paid, I thought it was value for money actually.

I would forget about trying to use any of the Casino facilities if I returned, they are pretty horrible, and they try to encourage you to go with free vouchers and then don't honour them.

The room was nice and spacious, clean and quiet, with a large balcony. Front desk staff were helpful and Internet was reasonably priced.

I would be more than happy to stay here again.

Were moved here from La Rabida which had provided us with terrible rooms. In contrast this was palatial. Checking in, internet access, bar, ATM machine with no charge were all very good. Good range of food for breakfast but as with many places, it is difficult to get a proper cup of tea. Concierge was very good at getting taxis.
