“Like staying at your buddy's apartment”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2013

The best hostel in Old town area (if not all of Quito; I have stayed at secret garden and colonial house). Perfect if you're traveling solo; giant community dining table makes it very easy to meet people. Great breakfast option every day. Only downside is that it is far from nightlife.

Top notch facilities in a great location. The staff was very personable and knew how to take care of their clients. The mattresses made it seem like I was sleeping on a cloud, and they provided huge, soft bath towels at no charge.
The bathrooms were spotless, and hot water was plentiful.
They serve great food as well, and provide a nice atmosphere to share time with fellow travelers.
Only complaint is the Internet signal was overloaded at peak hours.

This was definitely the best hostel I’ve stayed in so far. They really live up to their name by fostering a true sense of community and making it really easy for guests to meet each other and make new friends. When I stayed here, most of the guests ate breakfast and dinner together (the staff are all great cooks!) and even engaged in some of the social activities that the staff would coordinate (food tour, movie night, etc.) which were a lot of fun! As a woman traveling solo, I was really happy I chose this place because I met some awesome people, whom I now call my friends, and felt really safe during my stay in Quito. This was also one of the cleanest hostels I’ve been to. The rooms, bathrooms, kitchens and common areas were always clean, welcoming spaces. It is also located in a great spot. It is within walking distance from the colonial center of Quito and near a bunch of travel agencies to book trips around Quito. Probably the best thing about Community Hostel (next to the bottomless coffee and tea) is the super friendly staff. Everyone that works there is so nice and will bend over backwards to make sure you have everything you need. Love this place!
P.S. Book Omar (the driver for the hostel) to pick you up from the airport. Riding with him is much more entertaining than taking a taxi!

Big, spacious house with lots of rooms for chilling/meeting people. Good location. The rooms are a bit cramped, but fantastic mattress and good pillow. Enough plugs all around. But there's a lot of streetlight and noise, so bring earplugs and eyemask.
A kitchen to use and even a tab with purified water! Coffee and tea free all day. Breakfast for $2,50
Wifi was really bad: first it was slow and than there was none.
The bathroom is big (didn't like showering in a bath) but there is only one per floor. And because the toilet is in there as well, waiting times run on. But it's clean, everywhere.
Staff is friendly and helpfull. Lot's of activities in the wall or just ask.

A decent place but nothing special. The people were fine but the bathroom situation is tricky.... only 2 for 20+ people. Also, the corner rooms face the market, which has a cab stand, and of course cabbies in Ecuador honk at 6am more than any NYC cabbie you'll ever find.

Good breakfast, and we did meet great people, but the noise and the bathroom situation only warrant a 3-star rating.

Appropriately named, Community Hostel is the perfect place to meet fellow travelers and immerse yourself in the Quiteña culture in the heart of the Old Town. Between the huge communal table in the dining room, the fantastic dinners and breakfasts and the shared "living room" space, it is impossible not to meet people. The thing that really makes this hostel special, though, is the staff. They are extremely helpful, friendly and fun! No matter what you are looking for, whether it be how to get to some random place in Quito on public transportation or the best place to go out on a Wednesday night or the cheapest most delicious restaurant around, Marco, Karla and the rest of the staff can give you a great recommendation.

Other important factors:
Really clean
Free filtered water
Free coffee all day
Very comfortable beds and pillows
Kitchen for guests

With big fluffy towels provided by friendly staff at arrival, this hostel started off well in my books. The place was always clean, great food available, good kitchen space, comfy beds, good lockers, and most importantly, awesome people. I would recommend this hostel to anyone who wants to enjoy a friendly hostel experience while in Quito.
