“Friendly Family and Perfect Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2013

This hotel is conveniently located in the historic section of Quito and owned by a friendly family. The Grand Plaza is a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel, and my family felt safe throughout our stay. The owners gave good advice and made us feel like we were part of their family. The rooms are not all the same size, but we thought that this added to the charm of the building. If I return to Quito, I will most certainly stay here again. The friendliness of the owners, charm of the building, location, and price cannot be beat!

This is a great place to stay in the historic centre of Quito and after 4 days/5 nights in Quito we believe the historic centre is the most convenient area to stay. Cantuna is almost on Plaza San Francisco, which is close to Plaza Grande and a series of the most important sights of historic Quito. Cantuna has a wonderful ambience, as described by other reviewers, breakfast is very good, staff are very helpful with tours, directions, taxis etc , and most day staff have very good English. We had room 10 (offered a choice of two), a double with adjacent small sitting area with TV and exterior window. We couldn’t get WiFi in our room but the common areas nearby were so nice for sitting that we didn’t mind doing our internet there. We had no problems with noise, except when a group came in and spent some time in loud talk in the common areas.
Re safety and getting around in Quito - we had no problems and we walked around the historic centre day and evening - streets are relatively quiet and there are so many police around all the time. However, we did not walk up El Panecillo which we believe is still not recommended. We do recommend the Quito Tour Bus - with a $12 all day hop-on, hop-off ticket for a route with buses every hour that both orients you to the city and takes you to so many of the city’s key points, including El Panecillo (where it stops for 25mins for photos etc) and the Telepherique (recommended hop-off here - great views, allow 2 hours).

Room Tip: We saw only two rooms and chose 10 - larger with exterior window. It was also quiet.

I wanted to love this hotel. The staff was extremely friendly, spoke good English, the rooms were clean, the lobby area was beautiful and smelled nice. Unfortunately, the sleep in room 13 was horrible. First of all, our room was much smaller than other rooms (you can tell since empty rooms had their doors open for people to peek inside). Secondly, the Wi-Fi did not reach into our unit, so we had to go to the lobby to use the internet. Thirdly, the noise situation was just horrible. My husband and I had poor sleep for the 4 nights that we stayed.

At night, things that kept us up past 11pm included:

Restaurant noise
Restaurant cooking smells
Loud Chatter
Kids Playing

In the mornings, things that woke us up at 4:30am-5am included:

Rooster all morning
Barking dogs all morning
Extremely large vehicles flooring the gas pedal all night
Metal gates opening and closing
Restaurant noise
Church bells all morning

Thanks for your reviews, at the moment we are putting double glass in the windows who face the outside of the hotel is the only solution we have because we don’t know where are the dogs and the rooster I think they are in the front house .
Ones again thanks for choosing our hotel.

First of all I want to say that we could not have dreamed that we would have such a wonderful experience at this hotel. All the good reviews are true. Yes, we thought it would be charming and nice but the warmth and friendliness from the family and the staff was a truly pleasant surprise. Without going into exact detail, Sonia - you know what you did for my husband's mother! She was blown away. They were also truly accommodating and took the time to be so. Letting myself and husband switch rooms, helping with laundry, calling taxi's and making sure we were off to the right place. Helping us find authentic Panama hats and cooking wonderful breakfasts. The rooms were also great and are all just a little bit different. When we arrived no one else had checked in yet and we were lucky enough to see them all. The central courtyard is great and the upstairs dining and lounge areas are very comfortable. The environment was so friendly and warm, everyone would sit at little tables surrounding the courtyard, using the internet, and chatting. There is also a small roof area where you can sit and see La Virgen de Quito over colonial roof tops, lit up at night. Our room, #7 was really nice and quite spacious with one double and one single bed. Our window looked into the hotel courtyard and our bathroom. #1 is lovely, a window looking outside and two single beds and great feng shui. We did not experience problems with noise in either room. Both rooms were charming, had a good size bathroom and plenty of hot water and were clean. Also, bottled water and tea are plentiful in the upstairs dining room with a suggested donation of $1. The restaurant serves breakfast daily and it is excellent. We also enjoyed the restaurant at night and it was very good. We had the opportunity to talk with the chef who was very friendly. It is not every night you get to dine with the chef! Sonia, has done a beautiful job decorating the hotel so make sure to look around at all the small details. The hotel is charming and offers a true experience of colonial Quito and the location absolutely cannot be beat! Highly, highly recommended, we would go back in a heartbeat (As many people comment on the safety of Quito on various websites, at night the hotel is secured and there are people who are on duty during that time. We never felt unsafe at the hotel.)

My wife and I stayed here in December 2012 and January 2013. We had been in Italy the previous year. We had no idea what to expect in Quito. The vast historic part of Quito has been restored to a very high standard. We felt like we were walking around in Florence, Italy.

First, the location of Portal de Cantuna is ideal. It's just off PlazaSan Francisco which is one of Quito's most historic plazas along with PlazaGrande. The hotel is back from the street just far enough so any street noise is very distant. At a very comfortable level, we could faintly hear andean inca music being played by the street vendors far away. It really added to the atmosphere. Bernardo, the owner, was extremely helpful and friendly. This historic house is charming and full of history. Bernardo's ancestors comprise one of Quito's most historic families. In the old days, his family was famous for raising bulls for bull fights. They serve a good breakfast downstairs. For dinner or lunch, you are only about 100 feet away from Hotel Gangotena. There, you can eat incredibly delicious food in absolute luxury for not much more the $10. per person.
If you want to go on an excursion to Mita del Mundo or Termas de Papallacta, ask Bernardo to
Phone "Luna". Luna is the owner of a taxi we found independently. We had him drive us out to the hot springs and even all the way down to Otavalo. His prices were amazingly low, even when we hired him for the whole day. I hope we return to Quito some day. If we do, Portal de Cantuna is the place we'll stay.

Room Tip: As I recall, we had room 6. A little away from the main courtyard and very quiet. Very spacious.

We spent 3 nights at this hotel. We didn't get the room we booked, but a much smaller one. On our arrival we were already told (without asking anything) that we could change room the next day but this seemed to be impossible the next day. So we suppose, they knew they didn't give us the room we booked. Other tourists staying there, complained for the same reasons. Our room was very very noisy and has paper thin walls. At night, Young children were playing in front of the hotel.
When we stayed there (beginning of june), it was 12°C in Quito. The hotel has no central heating or whatever, not even in the "restaurant", so having breakfast "outside" was a daily challenge with pullover and coat on. The waitress also had her pullover and coat on while serving us!! Breakfast was ok, but nothing special. The delicious fresh fruit for breakfast, often described here, was either a few slices of apple or one big strawberry cut into pieces served on a tissue napkin. Service was not coordinated at all, so my husband most of the time finished breakfast already, and I didn't have my fried eggs yet, though we ordered the fried eggs simultaneously.
There was no hair dryer in the room as described on the voucher. Normally I don't care for this, but letting dry your hair at 12°C is just annoying. No television in the room (though we booked a room with TV). When we asked for it, they said : "Oh you want a TV, ok I will put one in your room". And there it came on day 3, the smallest size of flat screen ever seen, with a little table antenna. Normally we don't care either for TV, but when everything you booked seems to be missing, you start wondering why and asking for it!
Another annoying thing was that WIFI only worked in the patio (12°C and no comfotable chairs to sit on) and not in the rooms surrounding the patio. WIFI didn't always work and they often had to start the router again.
There was an electrical water heater upstairs, where you could prepare your own tea (tea-bags were provided), but it heated the water sooo slowly (about 10 minutes for 2 small cups), that you just felt like not having tea anymore.
We couldn't understand why this hotel got a TripAdvisor 2013 award, because the price-performance ratio was really not what we expected.
