“CASA GANGOTENA IS A REAL GEM OF QUITO”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

My husband and I live in Quito for 2 years. Where is the 3rd world? nowhere, in several occasions we have taken our guests to dine at Casa Gangotena and the service is unsurpassed, my husband is handicap, as we arrived the personal is so attentive and helpful to get my husband to the restaurant, they provide the wheelchair as well.

The Hotel is beautiful, has kept the real colonial style totally up grated to be the "REAL GEM" that Ecuador has. The food is typical of the region, its exquisite and well presented to the table, a very nice ambiance overlooking Plaza San Francisco, you feel so spoiled and wish to be there everyday. Casa Gangotena is "HISTORY" the home of former presidents of Ecuador.

I would like to recommend the world to stay at Casa Gangotena when you are in Quito.

Extremely friendly and efficent service upon arrival. Rooms and bathrooms spacious and excellently equipped. Perfectly trained and very attentive personal service greeting you by your correct name and trying to help you in any way they can. Nice bibliothec and small garden with fountain, modern interior design, interesting mix in this old and historic palace in the middle of the historic center of Quito. Escort service of hotel staff to other restaurants nearby during the night - excellent concierge. To be highly recommended - 5-stars !!!!! We'll return !

Room Tip: Rooms facing the inner courtyard are very quiet.

My husband and I used TripAdvisor to find Casa Gangotena, the first of 5 hotels we stayed in on our South American honeymoon. All of the places we booked were great, but this...this was...well. Do you know that part of Homer's "Odyssey" when Odysseus finally crawls up the beach of Ithaca after 20 years of hell? And Penelope's waiting for him and they embrace and they're all like "OH MY GOD can you believe this is happening everything's right with the world?!" It was a like that, only 1000x better, and with room service.

Seriously, guys, it was SUCH a nice place. We arrived there at 2 in the morning, two hours late on an Avianca flight that had a. lost our reservations and then b. lost our luggage. I was cranky and exhausted and panicked, because of course I'd spent the past 3 weeks buying impractical and expensive "bridal trousseau" dresses that for all I knew were now floating somewhere in the Atlantic. Then we made it to Casa Gangotena. The entire staff, from doormen to bellhops to the concierge, was awake, bright, and smiling. They had prepared sandwiches and fresh juice for us. There were chocolates waiting next to the sumptuous bed in our beautiful suite, which looked like something out of a Roman palace. My husband and I wanted to weep, we were so relieved and happy.

The next day, with the only clothes we had with us freshly laundered by Casa Gangotena's team, we toured Quito as the hotel staff took care of contacting the airport and getting our bags back. The manager, a twentysomething man whose name is escaping me now but who was just phenomenal, gave us a complimentary cell phone and his personal cell phone number so we could check on the progress of the situation. By the end of the night, we had our bags.

Later in the trip, Avianca messed up our flight reservation AGAIN, getting my husband's name wrong on our flight to Peru. I caught this early, and Casa Gangotena's staff again came to the rescue, spending an hour on the phone with Avianca customer service while hubs and I wandered away and had fun. This was the nicest, most attentive hotel staff I have ever met.

The luxury comes at a premium, as you'd expect. Casa Gangotena is expensive--at $400+ a night, probably the most expensive in the city. But what you get for that money is seriously comparable to something you'd get for $1000+/night in, say, New York. Hubs and I are lucky to have stayed in some nice places--for work and for fun--and I'd say the luxury and attention to detail here easily trumped the Trump International. (Memories of the time my mom was holed up in the TI on 9/11, watching people run screaming up Broadway all day, and then in the late afternoon a hotel employee knocked on her door with a big bag of gummy bears and said, basically, 'Sorry about terrorism! Here are some gummy bears!', but that's another story.)

If you do decide to stay here, get a massage. That was the best deal of all. I treated myself to a 60-minute in-room massage, and the masseuse was hands-down the best I've ever had. Due to the language barrier, she misunderstood how much pressure I wanted (a lot) until about 20 minutes into the massage, so she ended up massaging me for 80 deliriously wonderful minutes. The cost? $50. Full price, $50. That's 1/2 to 1/3 of what it would cost anywhere else, even a nearby South American country such as Peru.

Hubs and I satisfied ourselves that we saw a pretty good chunk of Quito during our visit, but now I want to go back just so I can stay in wonderful Casa Gangotena again. Sigh.

Room Tip: The Junior Suites are gorgeous.

This hotel is where you need to stay in Quito. We stayed before and after a Galapagos cruise and saw the difference between this hotel and all others as night and day. Old Town is a beautiful area and a photographers dream. The Hotel is amazing, beautiful and the service is exceptional. Worth the extra money for this 5 star Gem. Use a Virtuoso agent to book and receive extra amenities. Loved this hotel. One of the best in the world.

Room Tip: Only 31 rooms and not a bad one to be found.

I have stayed in many top-rated hotels, but I was particularly impressed by Casa Gangotena. The staff were incredibly helpful (they offered us a local cellphone to use in case we needed to contact them for any reason), and the rooms were lovely - the whole physical plant is beautifully done, and the views from the deck on top of the hotel are stunning. Breakfast was amazing and the afternoon tea (especially hot chocolate) was very good (and included). We also got massages that we both said were best or second best we've ever had. If you have the cash to spend, I wouldn't stay anywhere else, just terrific.

From the moment I walked into Casa Gangotena (after 2 looong flights to Quito) until I said goodbye the following day, I was 100% impressed with this hotel. Their service is impeccable, the rooms gorgeous, the little touches - fruit awaiting you in the room, chocolates, soft robes, etc - were just right. I travel all over Ecuador for business at least once a year, and I will return to Casa Gangotena at every opportunity. I will also recommend them to my clients who are seeking an upgraded luxury experience in the colonial center of Quito. This hotel does it better than any of the competitors.
