“Quirky Colonial”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014 for a stay in December 2013

Recently spent 5 nights here with my husband & a friend & although there are many things to recommend it, there are also a few things to be aware of that I didn't see in any reviews of the property.
First, the positives. Host/owner Matheiu gets an A+ for his responsiveness from initial inquiry to check out. As we arrived after 8pm & very tired, it was quite nice we could get something to eat & a decent bottle of wine at his small restaurant right around the corner. He was nice enough to provide us with coffee & milk to take home with us for the morning as well. When the electricity went out one morning, knocking out the wi-fi, one e-mail to Matheiu & all was back in working order when we returned home from our outing.
The property is in an excellent location if you want to be in the Centro Historico. All the major sights are within walking distance as well as a variety of restaurants & a grocery store. Matheiu also arranged an excellent driver to take us on a day trip to Otavalo market & the equator.
It should be made clear that this is a multi-storied house (4 levels). Starting at the entry it is 62 steps to the roof terrace (where the laundry is located) & 20 steps up from the entry to the main living area which can be challenging with heavy luggage or groceries. At 9500' elevation the up & down can leave you a bit breathless. This is not a suitable property for anyone with ambulatory issues.
Since the house is centered on a 3 story open courtyard & has no heat (apparently typical in Ecuador), it can be quite cold inside both day & night. Some space heaters would have been appreciated.
The kitchen is rather poorly furnished if you plan on doing any real cooking but is adequate for simple basics.
In summary, the house has a good location, a good host, a quirky charm & is interesting if a bit uncomfortable.

Thank you for the response and suppose your stay was pleasurable. I also personally appreciate the kind remarks on my character.......that is important since we are in the hospitality business.

I am not going to disagree with you on the comments on our house. This house is NOT for everyone...especially people who cannot climb stairs or want central heat. We did not renovate this house with the latest tastes of the typical American travler. We renovated this house to give one the FEEL of the 18th Century.....albeit with some modern conveniences. Putting in cental heat and God forbid...space heaters would loose the ambiance of the house. The two main bedrooms which tend to be colder do have a fiireplace and down comforters are abound. I suppose some travelers from my former country might expect an elevator to go up two floors.! We have never had any complants about our kitchen before which is probably due to the fact that we have Royal Prestige surgical cookery. However, if you woud have been more specific on what was missing....we would consider providing those items. That might help future guests.

Again...this house is not for everyone and we did not renovate it for "everyone".

“Fantastic house, perfect location”

Wow! Did we luck out! This was a great place to stay while visiting Quito. The house is amazing and very spacious- plenty of room for our group of four friends to hang out. Fix yourself a drink and sit on the roof top deck overlooking the city. The rest of the world disappears.
The location is excellent and the neighborhood quiet . We walked to the town square and found shops, restaurants, bus tours and a visitors center. One night we walked over to Mathieu's restaurant and had a great dinner and lots of drinks!
Mathieu sent a driver to pick us up when we arrived and then met us at the house. He gave us a brief tour and left his cell number for us. I called upon him several times to make arrangements for us since we don't speak Spanish and he was very willing to help.
I would say that this ranks among our top ten houses we have stayed in throughout the world. You get the real flavor of Quito by staying here, with all the comforts of home.
I would highly recommend this rental.

“Amazing House”

Wow... there was not one bad thing I can say about this incredible house. It is like a castle in the center of the city. It is so quiet inside you would never guess you were in the center of Quito, then you step outside and you are a short walk to every attraction you could dream of. The rooftop views are beyond stunning, the house is immaculate, and Mathieu and his wife were more than hospitable. We had such a wonderful time! Also they own a restaurant directly around the corner that is to die for!

This is by far the best review so far....short but describes exactly what we wanted to accomplish with this house. One has to FEEL the Ecuadorian culture not only today but as one did yesturday. We appreciate you staying with us and hope you return. Our best guets are the ones that are avid travelers.

the Spanish house was amazing. My brother and I rented one room and we had the whole house, all three stories. This exquisite old villa has been restored including beautiful modern kitchen and bathrooms. The woodwork and old artwork were wonderful. My brother particularly enjoyed the library. We regularly enjoyed the rooftop terrace and the wonderful views. Mathieu was very helpful and interesting. We visited his quaint restaurant and found it to be one of the most interesting in the area. The location in old Quito is great and we walked everywhere. As is typical in Ecuador, there is no heat and a sweater may be required in the evening. I would definitely stay here again.

We appreciate the comment and enjoyed having you stay at the house. We prefer to use the word "updated" as opposed to "modern"! Many guests have suggested we turn La Casa into a B&B but we prefer the privacey for our guests and will remain only for the one party that reserves it. We hope you return again and stay longer.

“Even better than the pictures”

This place is fantastic. We rented two rooms and two baths, but had the whole rest of the house as part of the deal. The appearance is amazing - real 18th century feel, but modernized kitchen and bathrooms (even a tap of purified water!). There is a huge open air sitting area, a comfortable dining area. A very nice separate TV room. Bedrooms and bathrooms are very spacious. The location is perfect - right in the middle of "old town", 5 minute walk to central square and presidental palace etc. The open air aspect of the house made it a bit cool for lounging, but one should be prepared for this in a city at 9,000 feet elevation, and we liked the cool air for sleeping. Fireplaces are provided in the rooms, but we chose not to use them. There is even a washing machine to help with extended stays! The owner was very helpful. I can also recommend is lovely cafe that is only a block away - great food and amazing ambience tucked into the corner of a monastery. This was so much better than staying in a hotel that I plan on doing something similar for future vacations in other cities. We felt like were were staying in Quito itself and not at a US hotel in Quito. Not good for people with mobility problems as there are steps up and down between every single room.

“CHARACTER, JUST LIKE THE OWNER!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013 for a stay in May 2013

We stayed here 2 nights, before our Celebrity Galapagos Cruise. Our flight was very late coming into the new airport which is over an hour from old town Quito. The city is 50 miles long and 9 miles wide. Mathieu had a driver waiting for us, and when we arrived he was there to greet us and give us as tour of the villa. The home is very near his restaurant where we enjoyed an excellent meal and ambience. The house is not air conditioned or heated, but this isn't necessary in Quito. The street next to the entrance gets a lot of traffic, including buses lined up a rush hour, but this was not a problem. Actually, it was nice to hear the sounds of children playing at a school coming through the open air courtyard. From the rooftop patio you have gorgeous views of much of old town, including the Basilica and the Virgin of the Americas. It is safe to walk during daylight in the vicinity. Mathieu is an American expat from Louisiana (and a former Marine) and has a lot going on (a farm, a restaurant, the rental property, a tour company, and church activities). Don't be surprised if you don't get an email response right away, but he is trustworthy. Also, don't expect a fully stocked kitchen. Instead, head out to eat in his restaurant or for breakfast any of the cafes on Chiles near the Plaza. The house is comfortable, but there are stairs to climb to get to the upstairs bedrooms. Mathieu helped us get our suitcases up. We had the entire house to ourselves and loved our brief stay. This is the kind of place you will want to take pictures of the interior and spend time exploring. This is not the JW Marriott or a bed and breakfast, so take it for what it is and enjoy the once in a lifetime opportunity to experience an 18th Century Spanish colonial home in a beautiful city. Suggestion for Mathieu: When bookings are made it would be helpful, for peace of mind purposes, that you indicate your cell # and the physical address of the property. This was not a problem for us, once we saw your driver at the airport holding a sign with name on it.
