“Delicious, worth it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

The atmosphere is great, the food even better. Cost isn't too bad, three of us ate and drank for about 50 dollars and we had leftovers for the next day's lunch! There are lots of options for sushi, pad thai, etc for vegetarians and meat lovers.

“Mas y Minos”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

The restaurant is nice to look at, and there is a variety on the menu. The sushi is adequate, and the service was pretty good.
I wouldn't recommend it to anyone on a budget as it is not cheap, and not worth a big splurge.

“Zao and Then”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2013

Zao is not spectacular, but the atmosphere is nice. It's worth a visit now and then.

We went in Saturday night at 6:30. They let us know immediately that the kitchen does not open until 7...most dining in Quito is done later in the evening so this wasn't that surprising. But not good when you have kids.

They were courteous enough to bring us out some wontons right away, as we had two hungry kids with us. They brought us drinks promptly as well.

We placed our order and they assured us that as soon as the kitchen was ready at 7 they would start serving, and they did. The spring rolls are good, not excellent, but the portion is quite generous. The dipping sauces are quite good.

We had a chicken with orange peel dish and a thai chicken curry. The former was good, the latter was marked with three chile icons, for really hot, but it came no where close. They probably know in the kitchen that while Ecuadorians like their aji (spicy chile sauce) they may not like their food to be super hot. So I was disappointed that the curry was really not very hot, nothing like curries I've had in Thai restaurants in North America. Good, but not hot.

As always, I skip the desserts here because they are overly sweetened and poorly made.

So visit, now and then, but not regularly. The bar is really nice and they have good house/lounge music on all the time, but it can get noisy in the restaurant later in the evening when it fills up.

“best Asian-fusion and service in quito!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

I've lived in Quito for 4 years and I have been to plenty of great restaurants. Zao is where I go to satisfy my cravings for Asian food (I'm from the SF Bay Area, and so it's been difficult to get pho or pad thai in this country). Not only is the food well-prepared with the best ingredients, but the wait staff are very friendly. Most Ecuadorian restaurants are infamous for not-so-great service, yet Zao really just went above and beyond.
