My wife checked into Hotel Boutique Plaza Sucre during the month of June 2012, and spent a total of 5 nights in Quito. The hotel is located in the historic district of the capital. Although the Quito historic district is a tourist area, the neighborhood could use some TLC (eg remove graffitti, a streetscape facelift, etc.) I got the sense that the historic district is not in the one of the safest neighborhood (especially at night), so minimize what you take with you, and use taxis.
The hotel is actually quite beautiful, and the common areas are decorated in early colonial Spanish. Many paintings adorn the lobby and hallways... and all are for sale. The hotel is centrally located to the Plaza Principal, and many stores and shops. Beautiful old churches can be found on every block.
There is a travel office at the front of the hotel lobby. The hours are intermittent. A full-time tour company is located across the street on Cl Sucre.
The first 3 floors contain the hotel's 20 guestrooms and suites. The fourth floor is the kitchen and breakfast room with a beautiful view of the 33 meter high statue of the Virgin of Panecillo. The common areas are well-maintained, and quite attractive if you enjoy old hotels with class and personality. There is a lounge/computer center in an atrium on the first floor. Computers are available for the guests, and there is a bar that never seems to be used. Hot coffee, tea and bottled water is available 24/7 in the lounge area.
We stayed in a 2 Bedroom suite on the first floor. The guest rooms are clean, but not anyways near immaculate. The room amenities includes TV, hair dryer and phone. Complimentary toiletries and bottled water are provided as part of the room package. The beds are comfortable, but are beginning to show their age. Overall, the decor of the room is not exciting. The bathroom is spacious as well as the shower. There was plenty of hotwater. A small safe is installed in the clothing closet. There are several small night tables and chest of drawers available for storage of clothing and other tiems. Our suite had 2 TVs, but one of the two was not operating. We notified the front desk, but nothing seemed to get done about it. We left well enough alone... we still had one TV that worked.
The staff was not unhelpful, but did only the minimal of what was required. Getting big USD bills change was always a hit or miss operation. The staff is bilingual, so English only tourists will not have any problems. The cleaning staff did an adequate job, and never missed a day. The kitchen staff has a simple breakfast ready at 7 am every morning. The menu included light breakfast items like fruit, juice, coffee, tea, bread and a few cold cuts. Plain fried or scrambled eggs were also offered. My wife gave the kitchen staff a dollar tip, and we were treated to a delicious ham and cheese omelette. Th client base seems to be mostly family and couples from all over the Americas and Europe.
With some hands-on management, and a facelift of the guestrooms, Hotel Plaza Sucre could evolve from a fair little hotel to a good little hotel. At $68 per night, the value of our package deal, is, IMO, a solid "average."
