“No let down after the Galapagos”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2009

Upon returning from the Galapagos, Bellavista picked us up at the Quito airport and took us to the reserve. The reserve was perfect, set in secondary and primary tropical Ecuardorian cloudforest. The hikes were great, the trails well marked and the guides...perfect.

The lodge itself is great, we stayed above the restaurant in our own room in the main lodge. Room was great: quaint and with a little balcony that put you up looking out into the tree canopy--keep in mind you're in a tree so you shouldn't expect the Ritz.

We stayed two nights and it included the meals which were great! Good soup and excellent trout (among other things).

They were flexible and even took us by the Mitad del Mundo on the way back.

“A truly splendid birding destination - and a hummingbird haven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2008

What a splendid place! I stayed there this month (January 2008) for three nights prior to a Galapagos trip and for two nights afterwards. Charming rustic accommodation but with all the facilities of a good small hotel, excellent food , superb guided walks in the 700 hectare reserve: many bird species, particularly hummingbirds - the jewels of the air! A unique blend of adventure and tranquility. Two and a half hours from Quito: they provide transport from and to the city.

“Great Hummingbirds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2007

Bellavista is worth a visit. We were there 3 days and 2 nights. The accomadation are basic but the setting is spectacular and the birds are great. If you are a birder it is better as birds are the main topic of discussion but even with out that passion the guides are good with walks through the forest with descriptions of plants and birds. My highest recomendation is I would go there again and I rarely go to places like that twice.

“Great birdwatching, wonderful soup, basic accommodation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2006

We visited in mid November and stayed 3 nights. We were in what is called the German house which is brick built but only single brick thick and you can still hear most of what goes on in the other rooms.
The longer you are staying the better the standard of accommodation. In the geodesic dome building the rooms are exceptionally spartan an access to the upper floors is by a vertical ladder. V.difficult for anyone with mobility issues and they reall ought to check how old/agile their guests are before allocating rooms. It would be wise to check therefore when you book.
i think the German house is probably the best.
The food was delicious and could not be faulted. There was no chice as such but nothing that I would turn my nose up at and I presume they could do veggie food if you warned them in advance. The soups in particular were delicious.
There are a wide variety of trails helpfully graded in terms of difficulty and ranging from easy to suicidal!!. Interestingly part of this grading was categorised by age of the walker.
There were guided walks that were part of our package but some guests had to pay $10 per walk which seemed a lot.
Our guide was Gabriel who was excellent.
Guided walks take place in the morning at 6.30 followed by breakfast at 8.00 and another longer walk at 9.30. Lunch was at 1pm most days and dinner at 7pm.
There was a afternoon walk as well but I confess that as it rained every afternoon we were there that i wimped out and read a book instead!
I found the best walk to be the 9.30 one - at least I seemed to see more birdlife then than on the 6.30 walk. Also it was quite sunny and warm up until about 12.30 when the clouds would roll up the valley and envelop us.
You can sit for hours watching the humming birds using the feeders that are set out. The booted racket-tail was particularly fun to watch.
A very quiet and relaxing spot to be with great food and scenery/fauna & flora. Shame that the accommodation is a little lacking but hey we can all put up with a little less in return for this type of nature experience.

“bellavista - beautiful cloud forest and eco-friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2006

We stayed at Bellavista in June on the last leg of our holiday. It was a lovely, restful place, just the peace and quiet we needed after 2 hectic weeks of tours and trips.

We stayed in the trailhead house and found it very cosy. There's no denying it's basic, but it is clean and the setting is stunning. The Hummingbirds are simply amazing - we took a whole day just to watch and photograph them.

The food is very good and the drinks very reasonable. I'd recommend at least a one night stay here, if for no other reason than to try and catch an amazing sunset over the Andes - simply stunning.

We saw quite a few birds - it is amazing whet you can see just around the lodge.

We asked Bellavista to arrange transfers and the owner, Gloria, picked us up herself from Quito. The drive up to Bellavista is simply stunning - the scenery is wonderful and worth the trip.

If you plan ahead you can also stop at Mitad Del Mundo the middle of the world-- on the way back.
