Robinson Crusoe Inn
Wednesday 23rd January to Saturday 2nd February 2008
On recommendation of my brother (Dr. D.M. Wilson stayed in Valparaiso for a couple of nights in 2006, whilst on business), my wife and i pre-booked a three night stay at the Robinson Crusoe Inn from Wednesday 23rd January 2008. we had arrived on a cruise ship and were staying in Chile for 10 days before returning north. Doctor! What an excellent recommendation. Three nights....... well we just could not resist - we stayed 10 nights and that was the best decision made in a long time.
I have worked, rested and stayed in a lot of hotels, in many countries, over a great many years (for that matter more than I like to think about or remember). Now here was a real hidden away ‘gem’.
Such lovely staff, spotlessly clean, superb breakfasts, fantastic views – this hotel was not what I was expecting.
A short taxi ride up from the port of Valparaiso, around steeply twisting streets; dusty (also sadly too much litter lying about) and not in the greatest of repair – mind you some lovely splashes of colour from the odd overflowing, flowering shrubs and trees that spilt from steep sided gardens - one had to watch for the traffic that was in such a hurry and could be on either side of the road as drivers avoided those tricky bumps – taxis, buses – why is the world in such a hurry.
One arrived at the front door of the hotel - carefully situated in such a way as the front door was in shadow and protected from the heat of the day. a ring on the bell – yes the front door was locked, but it gave a feeling of a real sense of security – how sensible in this day and age of city life the world over. Then, such a surprise as one was warmly ushered into the reception area. the decor, furniture, rugs and artwork create such a lovely atmosphere – the hotel is really cleverly designed - one almost wants to explore from the top downwards – the building must have almost been designed round the ‘room at the top’. Wow! What a view – why should one want to go anywhere. i gather that the owner was at pains to keep some of the history of the building intact when modernising this Valparaiso Historical Building. I just loved the way the whole building was open from floor to floor. The wood and tastefully shown artwork was a delight to enjoy.
We stayed in one of the lighthouse rooms – rich in furnishings the room was not large, but it was comfortable and charming – mind you, not that much room in the bathroom. All services were on suite and if one were in need of more space – well worth treating oneself to one of those two ‘top of the house’ suites – we had a sneak pre-view - they are something else.
Over the 10 days we spent much of our time in that main ‘room at the top’. Breakfast was also served in this stunning room. And as for breakfast...... just delicious – fruits, fruit juices, sweets, omelettes, toasts, coffee and ‘great’ tea. As to the staff – they are just so helpful. Nothing is too much trouble, and all done with lovely, friendly smiles.
To our host, Mr. Jorge Henderson – (should you ever read this) you are blessed with a lovely place, beautiful staff and the welcome and friendliness received has given us a fantastic Chilean experience. Be assured this hotel is on top of our agenda as a place to return to and if in Chile? Yes it is a definite ‘MUST'.
