“Top location, quaint decor, great value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2009

The Hotel Foresta is located at the bottom of Santa Lucia hill in central downtown Santiago. It is a few 100 metres from the Bella Artes metro station and has great restaurants and bars nearby as well as the city centre, main square and Parque Forestal. While the building is old and the decor quaint, you can't beat the location, comfortable rooms, friendly staff and a great price. We had a twin room overlooking the park, room 203, which cost US$45 a night including breakfast. It is not the Sheraton but is excellent value for money.

We were delighted with our room at Foresta. Yes, the bathroom particularly was run down, but hey, there was great water pressure in the shower, the room was huge and well-furnished, bed comfortable, and you weren't paying a ridiculous price! The doorman and desk staff were really friendly and helpful. The location couldn't be beaten.

We just loved the Foresta in the Barrio Lastarria. Were going to stay a couple of days but ended up staying a week. Walking distance to city centre, Mercado Centrale (a must see), close to metro stations and loads of great restaurants and bars around. Try Patagonia Restaurant - just fab - but the best of a list. The best Pisco Sour's around are made by Santiago in the Bar Don Rodrigo downstairs: A classic, old fashioned joint that fills up with locals. Room was large and very clean. Some unusual pictures & furniture but all adds to the charm. Sebastian on reception is an absolute gem - he just cannot do enough for you.

We arrived at the Santiago bus station without a place to stay. The hostel we walked to was booked, and the girl there called a dozen places for us before we were able to get a room at Hotel Foresta (the last room they had available). We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived - we had a two room suite - for US$50 per night. (For fun, we checked out the Crowne Plaza nearby, and they quoted us US$250 per night. Yikes!) Although the Foresta has faded charm, having all that space felt luxurious. The room had a mini-fridge, so we bought food and ate breakfast on the sofa. The bed was comfortable and the bath modern. No complaints. Although we ended up staying for three nights, it was on a night-by-night basis, as they were fully booked. We lucked out due to cancellations. The location was great - across the street from Cerro Santa Lucia Park (passport required for entry) and a short walk to Plaza de Armas, as well as metro stations. On the next street over (Lastarria) are many restaurants and bars with Happy Hours (must try a Pisco Sour!), and there are bakeries and ice cream cafes nearby. All in all, a fine place to stay - an old-time boutique hotel that is a good value.

We stayed at the Foresta for 7 nights and it fit our needs perfectly. The price was definitely budget, but the service we received certainly wasn't. The staff was exceptional. They were very professional in appearance & demeanor and they were extremely helpful and courteous to us, despite our limited Spanish. Sebastian was especially helpful, going above & beyond his responsibilities. He was knowledgeable, informative and accompanied his information with his illustrations. His bilingual capabilities make him a tremendous asset. Without him the sightseeing and the dining would have been limited. The rooms were immaculate! They not only vacuumed but polished the floors daily. The location couldn't be better. It is in Barrio Lastarria which seems to be a very safe neighborhood - with many wonderful restaurants (our favorites in Santiago) just around the corner. It is within easy walking distance to the historic downtown area, 2 metro stops and Barrio Bellavista. Not to mention it is right across the street from Cerro Santa Lucia - a gorgeous park that was our view from our window. We couldn't have been happier with all aspects of the hotel.

Pros: Great location, reasonably clean for the price

Cons: Management promised us a non-smoking room but ours smelled and had ash trays; management didn't turn the central heat on (in the middle of winter!) until 10PM ... they promised us a portable heater but it never arrived after following up three times; the hotel is really showing its age, carpets, bedding and wallpaper were very worn.

We paid $63/night for a room with a matrimonial bed. I'll admit overall a good deal, but I was 10x happier after changing hotels (to one that put the heat on and didn't make empty promises!)
