Providencia Panamericana Hotel

You know how in the travel industry, you read how those working there should aim to please? Well, the staff in Panamericana are not like that.

First, beware there is a Panamericano that is in the downtown area. My shuttle dropped me there, which was the wrong hotel. The staff were very helpful. They called my other hotel and then called a cab, lugged my luggage into the other cab and then told me the cab fare to pay. That was a good start.

So I was in a good mood as Im checking in. Once in the room, I was surprised there was no tissue. So I called and the guy at the line kept saying "t-shirt?" I finally went to the reception where he said they don't use tissue in Chile.

My room was all right although somewhat spartan. Having just come from hotels in Asia, I was disappointed of course. There was a cake of soap, two bottles of shampoo and a shower cap. Fortunately I had my own shampoo and shower gel. The aircon was not working well. There was no kettle or complimentary mineral water. Internet access was good through a lan line.

Breakfast was basic and the menu was identical in the days I was there.

Now on the service: I booked a tour but the following day I was not sure when my meeting would end. So I got my Spanish friend to help explain. The front desk man told my friend the time and then when we pointed out that his time was different from that of the brochure said, The time I told you is the time. He refused to check to confirm and even denied that there was someone called Claudio whom I had dealt with for the booking. I cancelled the tour.

As I am leaving, I ask another man to book a shuttle. He turns around and asks me for the phone number of the shuttle company. "If you don't know the number how can I call?" In the end, because the shuttles need 3 hours of notice, I had to use him.

I then changed some pesos to tip the driver but was shortchanged as I did not count the change properly.

All in all, I would say that if you have the money, buy the hotel chain, revamp the management and you should have a good business. This hotel especially is well located, near a metro stop, near excellent restaurants and on a quiet leafy street. It would be perfect hotel, but for the managers ruining it.

This was a "hub" hotel on our 3 week tour round Chile - stayed here 5 nights overall as we returned through Santiago enroute to somewhere else! Roughly 20 min drive from the airport, off peak.

Basically nothing to add to the other accurate reviews on this site. Good service, rooms were fine - dated decor but kept clean. Reasonably easy access to the Internet facility. Good location for the metro and the variety of good restaurants nearby. Breakfast was fine and good bar snacks available one evening when we returned late.

Slight delays in checking out whilst they sent someone to check out the room loudly by radio! But hardly an issue overall.

“Dirty room and bathroom”

Providencia Panamericana Hotel

We stayed for one night only in this hotel on Tuesday 20 February 2007 arriving at about 10.00 p.m. and leaving at 11.00 a.m. the following morning. The hotel is in a nice quiet street and the reception area was quite good. Our bedroom was very small, dark , grubby and dingy but worst of all one of the bedspreads was badly stained. The carpet was also dirty. The curtains did not close properly. The sheets looked as if they had not been ironed and I actually wondered if they had been already slept in! I immediately complained to reception and they showed me the only room which was vacant, the one next door and it did not appear any better. Much later, we took the spare pillows out of the wardrobe to find that they did not have any pillow cases on them and one of them was blood stained!!

The bathroom was very grubby, with mould on the grouting and peeling paint on the door, which was broken at the bottom and no one had cleaned behind it for a long time. The lavatory seat was cheap plastic and did not fit properly. The towels were completely worn and instead of being white were pale grey! Breakfast was acceptable except the backs of the chairs in the dining room were filthy with dust and some had ingrained food. In view of the state of the bedroom I was decidedly uneasy eating in the dining room! This hotel needs some serious cleaning redecorating in the bedrooms and bathrooms. I would not recommend anyone to stay here and the only reason we stayed was because it was so late when we arrived.

“Nice hotel, great location”

Providencia Panamericana Hotel

The hotel is located in a nice quite street in a busy area very close to the main street in Providencia. It was very close to the metro and also walking diatance to the Cable Car ride though a beautiful neighborhood.

The outside of the hotel is attractive with two fish ponds. The lobby is also very attractive. You get a complimentary drink upon check-in. The staff spoke excellent English and although my Spanish is limited I almost felt guilty that it was so easy to communicate.

Our room was okay. It was very large, but it seemed like they never vacuumed the floor. If we were staying more than one night I would have asked for someone to come up and vaccum. The carpet and bedspreads were very worn. The room was very quiet.

The complimentary breakfast was excellent. There was ample choice and the fruit was very fresh.

The other nice thing was the courtyard with the pool. The courtyard got shady early in the day and it was a nice place to sit and relax. They held our bags after check out and we returned an hour before we needed to leave for the airport. It was very comfortable sitting in the courtyard while our son played. They called a taxi for us to get to the airport and made sure that our luggage would fit.

Overall, this hotel would only be better if they replaced the carpets and bedspreads.

“Not at all what we expected”

Providencia Panamericana Hotel

A group of nine of us stayed at the Providencia Panamericana Hotel on three separate nights over a three week period in late December 2006 and January 2007. Our trip was arranged through an adventure outfitter in Santiago, so the hotel was selected for us as part of their package. Since all the rooms were prepaid, we never saw a bill and don't know what rate we paid.

Our first impression upon arrival at the hotel was somewhat favorable. It is located on a quiet, tree lined street in Providencia, which we were told was an upscale neighborhood of Santiago with good restaurants and shopping. All room were available upon check-in and we were offered coupons for a free welcome drink.

Most of the rooms were quite small. Queen or twin beds with night stands, a cabinet with a minibar on which the TV was placed (mostly Spanish stations, though we had access to BBC and CNN) and a writing desk and chair. Everything seemed worn, from the carpeting to the bedspreads and wall coverings. There was air-conditioning, which was necessary in the mid-90 degree heat, though it was barely adequate to make the room just less hot, rather than cool.

The bathroom had a shower/tub combo with a single sink and hairdryer. Shampoo and soap were provided, along with two hand towels and two bath towels. (Remember, many hotels in other countries don't provide washclothes, so if you use one, bring your own). Water pressure and hot/cold water were iffy at best. Again, the bathroom was quite worn - in need of grout and tile cleaning.

Breakfast was included with the room - a small buffet in the restaurant. Juices (though the orange juice throughout our travels seemed to be Tang), breads, fresh fruit (excellent one day, almost non-existent the other two days), eggs and sausage and ham.

The employees were all friendly, but often couldn't answer questions - where is an ATM? we'd like a light dinner - any suggestions nearby? what should we see in the area? There was a touch screen kiosk with shopping and restaurant ads, along with two very slow computers for internet access in the lobby (and they always seemed to be in use). The hotel had a small pool in a garden area which was quite a surprise.

I have to say we were all disappointed in the hotel and managed our first night stay on our own. However, after traveling throughout more remote areas of Chile and Patagonia for the next two weeks, and having stayed in some pretty basic (more rustic) accomodations and camping, the next two times we returned the La Providencia it seemed a bit more adequate for our needs.

If we were to return to Santiago, we'd look for a hotel even further east than Providencia which is apparently the new area of growth - perhaps the Hyatt or the Ritz. Just a couple of blocks from the Providencia was a Sheraton Four Points that looked like it might have been a better choice for us.

Also, be aware of hotel ratings in different countries. This hotel has a four star rating which does not correspond to anything similar in the USA. Fellow travelers rated it somewhere between a Motel 6 and a Super 8 - maybe a Fairfield Inn in a small town.

For our very short nights, this hotel served our purpose. Reasonable facilities, OK beds, OK location. Pretty much just an OK hotel. Probably wouldn't return.
