“Very Good Food, BUT There Is A Potential Problem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2012

This is one of the most difficult reviews that I’ve done because the food was very good, but there is a serious potential problem for some visitors (explained in detail below). But, before I go into that, let me begin with the food. All that we had was very good; although, the selection is rather limited with just one page of entrees including wursts, beef tartare, smoked pork, Hungarian goulash, etc. To begin we ordered a Pisco Sour which was just average. In retrospect we should have ordered German beer. Then we were served two slices of dark whole grain bread with a creamy mild mustard-like spread on each. That was unexpected and a nice touch. For our main entrees we had Hungarian Goulash, Lomo Kassler, Red Cabbage and German Potato Salad. The portions were generous and everything was delicious. For dessert we had a nice piece of Apple Kuchen with ice cream. We were served rather quickly, most likely because we arrived just after 8 PM, which is their typical opening time. Upon our arrival, except for the bar, there were few tables occupied. Our meal was just over CLP30,000 (about USD$60) plus the tip.

Now for the POTENTIAL PROBLEM: Upon entering, one gets the feeling of being in an old German restaurant in Berlin. The décor is said to be of 1920’s Germany; however, upon closer inspection, one begins to see something very different: A gold framed portrait of General Pinochet, photos of Chilean soldiers in review during the Pinochet regime and a glass case containing a lead soldier recreation of Pinochet’s funeral are nestled among the German artifacts. Those of you who are not from Chile may find all of this to be totally irrelevant; however it is important to understand that many Chileans are very sensitive about General Pinochet and there is a great divide in the attitudes over the coup of 1973 when Pinochet became Chile’s dictator for nearly two decades. Some Chileans consider Pinochet a hero (they are called Pinochetistas); meanwhile, many others hate him with an unbridled passion for the deaths and human rights abuses which occurred during his regime. Because of this situation, if you plan to dine here with a Chilean, it would be wise to find out in advance how they feel about Pinochet before actually arriving and possibly having an unpleasant situation on your hands! I have personally heard comments including: “Lili Marleen’s is a den of Pinochetistas.” and “Those photos ruined an otherwise wonderful dinner.” This may or may not be an issue for your or your guest, but at least you will not be surprised after being seated at your table.

Finally, if you do decide to dine here, our server recommended making reservations at least two days in advance as it can be quite crowded.
