I had a safety a safety-day in Santiago in late November while waiting to catch a once-a-week flight to the Falklands for a cruise. We wanted to spend the day outdoors with minimum hassle and maximum scenery. I hemmed and hawed about prepaying for this trip because of a prior experience with a prepaid 'boat trip from hell' in Alaska--I did not want to be committed to a long trip in lousy weather. Because of this, I waited until 3 days before our arrival when I could check out the local weather in Santiago. Everything was good, so we signed up via internet (and a phone call to provide credit card info). Our guide, Marcello, showed up promptly at 7:30 am with a newer, high quality SUV adequate for the four of us (six with driver and guide) and whisked us around Santiago to the mountain road up to El Morado National Park. The drive was quite scenic with stops as frequently as we liked for photos. We did the hike to the laguna near the glacier in a couple of hours and had an outstanding lunch (provided by Marcello). The weather was perfect and the hike was just what we wanted before being cooped up on a ship for three weeks.
Clearly you can do this trip without a private tour (rent a car, find your own way), but Santiago Adventures made this a no-hassle, relaxing way to spend our safety day. We were extremely happy with all aspects of the experience.
