“Gorgeous hotel in the best neighborhood of Santiago (Bellavista!)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2014

This was the "splurge" hotel of our recent honeymoon... We ended our trip to Argentina and Chile here in the hip Bellavista neighborhood of Santiago and felt very lucky to be staying at such a beautiful place! I'm actually not quite sure there are too many other hotels in this neighborhood so I'm glad we found this place. It's right at the foot of the Cerro San Cristobal hill where you can take a funicular to the top and see a Virgin Mary statue as well as amazing views of the city. If you walk 5 minutes down the street you will end up at the cool Patio Bellavista which from the outside looks like a mall, but when you walk in is filled with tons of great restaurants all basically set up for outdoor eating. It's a pretty cool experience!

The hotel itself is on beautiful grounds and since we were there for New Years, they really went above and beyond to make sure their guests had a great night. They opened up their Piano Bar for a great tapas dinner (for guests only) and then led us to their rooftop pool for a great view of the nearby fireworks show. They were kind enough to upgrade us to the "Cerro San Cristobal" suite which seems to be designed for honeymooners like us, the bed is HUGE (oversized King), and has an open concept bathroom area, which took us a bit to get used to, but the room itself was perfect. It also had an outdoor terrace that looked straight out to the rooftop pool and overlooked the outside eating area.

My only criticism would be that some of the front desk staff were not as friendly in person as they seemed via email. All the way leading up to our stay, I was emailing back and forth with various front desk staff, but when we arrived, we were greeted with some smiling faces, and then some not so smiling faces. Rachel at the front desk, as well as the other Rachel at the bar, were fantastic! However, in contrast to almost everyone else, one other woman who worked the front desk was actually not only un-helpful, but often quite snotty. We had asked her several times about making dinner reservations since we checked in and every time I would return to ask (because she didn't call the room once to follow up, I had to go down and ask her in person), she had some excuse about why she had not done so yet (the restaurant was not open yet, she was busy doing something else- yes she actually said that-, etc.). I had to literally stand there to watch her call the restaurant in order to finally get a reservation. This was our only issue though and hopefully this was just an off experience with this particular staff member. The hotel manager (Mark I think?) was also fabulous and friendly and would often be walking around the hotel checking how everyone was doing.

Besides that one hiccup, we had a wonderful stay and I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a modern, classy, beautiful oasis in the best part of Santiago! (Just beware the heat in the middle of December!! It definitely causes some places to lose power! Not the hotel, but surrounding restaurants, bars...)

Room Tip: We stayed in the Cerro San Cristobal suite which was beautiful!! Open concept bathroom takes a bit o...

We stayed 3 nights at The Aubrey. This is definitely one of our top favorite hotels. The entire staff from the front desk, breakfast staff, bar, security at gate, house keeping and grounds keepers were friendly and ready to help with anything to make sure our trip was perfect. It started with emails. I was trying to book rooms during high-season. They worked hard to make it work for us and also sent additional emails with activities to do in the area and set up transportation. Once we got there, we felt like special guests at a good friend's house. Everyone was friendly and happy. My daughter spent her 10th birthday there. They had pink balloons decorating her bed, pink flowers, pink candy, pink toys. She loved it!! The hotel is very secure, I never worried about her running around the beautiful grounds. Mark, one of the owners, even found me to ask if everything was good. Mark, you have a wonderful place. We will be back!!

The Aubrey had major pros and huge cons and not much in between. First, the pros:

--- Soooo pretty. Really nice interior design, a mix of modern and antique that reads both stylish and relaxing. Really attractive pool terrace, lots of outdoor seating, little nooks and common rooms where you can hang out. Every room is unique and interesting.

--- Location. I passed through Santiago twice and stayed both at the Aubrey and at the W in Las Condes. Las Condes has great shopping and great restaurants--it's a nice place to stay. The Aubrey is in Bellavista, right around the corner from Pablo Neruda's Santiago house and the funicular that goes up to the big statue of the Virgin Mary. In terms of sightseeing, I thought the Aubrey had a much better location. In terms of rolling out the front door and finding good food, points to the W.

--- Some of the staff were just wonderful. Great energy, cheerful, personable. Especially at breakfast and in the piano bar.

Cons:

--- The hotel was without water--any water; sinks, toilets, the works--for one whole day during our stay. This is pretty bad, but it was a neighborhood-wide cutoff. Okay, fine. I asked at reception about getting a discount or tossing in some free drinks or whatnot to compensate for the inconvenience. Nada--not their fault, not their problem.

--- I asked someone at reception to call me an airport shuttle. Went down at the appointed time & when the shuttle arrived the (different) person at reception actually tried to send the shuttle away because "they don't use that service". Bizarre and also potentially disastrous.

--- We asked someone at reception to make a restaurant reservation. They said they had. Several days later, they said that the restaurant had called to cancel on us. They tried to spin this as being the restaurant's fault, but I did not find the explanation convincing & mostly concluded that it's dangerous to rely on reception to accomplish anything properly.

--- This is a long story and I don't want to dish on all the details, but they made a mistake on my bill, contacted me after the fact & presented it as my mistake (no, sorry, I didn't draw up the bill), & crossed some lines in their attempts to correct the mistake. I had to have my credit card company intervene. I could say a lot of nasty things about this experience, but at a minimum: astonishingly rude.

--- Missing towels. Every time we went to our room, we'd find a different number of towels, and it was never, ever enough. Sort of bizarre.

Looking over this, this is my conclusion. If you want to go to a really attractive hotel and do not plan to need any customer service at all during your stay, the Aubrey is a decent choice. If you like that full-on luxe experience, there are better options.

The common spaces in the hotel are beautiful, and the pool is fantastic. The breakfast offered is delicious. The concierge and front desk people were all great about helping us reserve tours and recommending restaurants. There was just one concierge who was terrible at her job, who sulked for most of her shift, refused to make restaurant reservations, and claimed she knew nothing about the neighborhood where the hotel was located. The hotel has other small problems: it has no "do not disturb" signs so the cleaning people were constantly knocking on our door; it has no real restaurant for lunch or dinner. But overall we had a good time there.

Great hotel, great staff, great location...look no further!
We were very impressed with what this boutique hotel has to offer.
The Park next door is also a great place to visit and spend time, running, waling or just doing a trip up funicular to top! Also visit the zoo nearby!

We loved our 5-night stay at the Aubrey. What a beautiful property! We were fortunate to be upgraded to the Cerro San Cristobal Suite for the duration of our stay and loved it. It is a completely open concept so a better choice for couples than friends sharing a room. Breakfasts and the pool area were great.

Yes - weekends can get a little loud in the Bellavista neighbourhood so if you are a very light sleeper be forewarned. It didn't bother us too much and we loved the neighbourhood. Great restaurants nearby (try Peumayen Ancestral Food and El Mason Nerudiano) for great Chilean fare, both recommended by hotel staff. The hotel is very well located and easy to walk to many of the attractions in the City.

Looking forward to our next stay at the Aubrey!

This is a fabulous hotel with relaxing pool area and piano bar.
Unfortunately the noise from surrounding Bella Vista restaurant and bar area is annoying to say the least at the weekends. Continuous yelling, drum beating and chanting until 0400hrs not conducive to sleep.
The attic room can be challenging as you have to bend to avoid the ceiling moving around on one side of the room and lighting inadequate
Staff were great and breakfast adequate.
